I just set my first four pea eggs of the year. They are all ut of my dark pied male, pied hen pen. I will keep updating this thread as the season continues. I am hoping to hatch about the same number of chicks as last year (21). Maybe more but I'm not sure if I have the space/market for that many. If I do run out of room I will probably just free range the excess birds at my grandparents summer house. I really hope I have an even sex ratio this year. For the last two years I have hatched like five times as many hens as males and I have way to many girls. Hope these first four all hatch.

With several comments about finding it hard to obtain good quality Brabanters, has anyone purchased from Sandhill? Where have you found good quality stock? If our town changes it's regs, this is...

I like everything about it except how it looks right now. I know it lays decently. It is a great part of my great waterfowl flock.

First, watching a runner duck run is awesome. They can find their own food. They aren't like pekins in water. Mine haven't started laying but I heard their decent.

Its not as fat and slow as a pekin, but its not frail either. I want a mallard but I don't want a flying bird. The rouen is great for that.

They are my calmest birds and are easiest to catch. They eat less than Pekins. I heard they also lay well, but mine are younger.

My first 29 eggs may be ruined as of today because of the storms we had,,lost power for 3 hours here,,I did put candles in the bator and did manage to keep temp very close to 100 degrees during the outage,,but still it has me a little concerned.Hope your 1st hatch is good.

That happened to me last year. All the eggs kept developing, though. I've been thinking of getting one of those battery backup units they make for computers, to at least give my incubators a little more time if and when the main lines go down again this year.

I've read some instances of putting "heat sinks" in a bator to absorb heat, such as bricks or pint jars of water.I may try this, but once the bottom area of the bator is being used for a hatcher there won't be room for anything extra.

Well she took a break from laying, but I found and egg today (probably layed yesterday evening). Only one problem, the bottom was brokken off all the way around like it is when a chick hatches and the inside was eaten
. This hen ate eggs two years ago but not last year, I was hoping she simply forgot the habit. I guess not. Looks like I will be buying some dummy wood eggs
.
I use bricks in my incubators. They help to keep the temeratures more stable during the cycling of the heating element(s).

Well I have been offline for a while but I'm happy to report that three out of the four eggs hatched. There is one white, one dark pied, and one blue. We didn't get any eggs for more than a week after setting but I know she ate a few. Then we got a few from her and one of the five two year old hens started to lay so we set a few eggs on the twentieth. The next set went in on the twenty-eighth after one of the hens in my trio of 4 and three year olds started to lay, that mean I had 3 laying hens at that point. And this sunday I set 15 eggs, I have gotten eggs from all four of my pens with breeding age hens at this point. I think two of the two year olds are laying because I am getting an egg a day from them. As of right now I think I have set just as many eggs as I did all of last year. This season is going to be awesome! I will most likely have more than enough birds to start the free range flock my mom has always wanted by the time the season is over.
