Can a barred rock rooster have an unbarred offspring? - Page 4

Do you have a photo of the rooster used?

No I don't have the rooster or hen.  I was given this guy because a friend said that the light colored ones at his place then to be predator bait. <Knock on Wood> I haven't had that kind of problem yet.

I have a BR cockerel and Sex link pullets that could give me these kind of chicks someday (Too young right now - Barred Rock just started crowing a couple of weeks ago, and only 4 of the 10 pullets so far are laying, 3 of which just started in the past week).

Here's another photo of him that I forgot about having.

CGinJCMO,   That is why I asked for the photos.  I  didn't see the parent stock in your sig.  Frankly, I honestly don't think that bird came from such a match, but it isn't surprising that your friend guessed at the parentage when he gave the bird to you.    I'm no genetics expert, but IIRC, Barred Rock, pure BR rooster must throw that barring to every chick.  I just don't think BR over RSL makes that chick, frankly.  It doesn't matter and I'm not being fussy for the sake of being fussy.  If people have a few different birds in their flocks and hatch, they aren't always certain just which combination of what happens in the barnyard.  LOL

Another possibility is that the rooster used appears as a Barred Rock, but simply isn't a pure BR.  That is extremely common.

The latter is what I would guess on that chick smile.png

I know FOR SURE the parent of my white chicks was my barred rock rooster. It was either that or a silkie, which I highly doubt tongue.png

One copy of the barring gene could throw this chick. I have a reddish coloured bird from a rooster that only had one copy of the barring gene.

No offense taken.  I just thought I had a cool looking chick that would answer the title of the post.  wink.png

that BR roo had to be Heterozygous for both Extended Black and sex linked barring, because that boy is NOT showing Extended black at all

My girl has FINALLY started to lay big_smile.png Her eggs are relatively large for a pullet egg, and she is 20 weeks.

Here is Jaycie a week ago.

_MG_5150.jpg
2 weeks ago - she's really big. Even bigger than my regular barred rock pullet that is a few days older.

_MG_5897.jpg
Her brother is thinner than she is, and has really cool ghost barring.

_MG_5899.jpg
He also has 1 random barred feather in his tail

_MG_5901.jpg
This boy is 3 weeks younger than Jaycie and will be going to freezer camp this weekend.

_MG_5891.jpg
Here is the youngest of the RSL hen x BR rooster. She is 11 weeks old.

I'll be definitely adding the two girls to my layer flock.
