Fellow BYC friends
Today I attended the funeral arrangements for Deerman and wanted to share a few things with his friends here.
I let the Craft (Deerman's) Family know how much we loved him here at BYC and everything he helped us with. Burt has a great family and I could see that they were hurting tremendously.
Burt was at peace and when he left us I know that he was living life to the fullest up until the very end. He much preferred this over a long drawn out stay in a hospital. I spoke with him late Thursday/early Friday and he was in great spirits and feeling pretty good. We talked peafowl, summer plans, a corn snake he bought for his grandson and much more. Burt loved the interaction on BYC, whether peafowl, other poultry, or the general discussion not relating to birds. You all have contributed to his joy here on BYC.
I wanted to share a funny story that occurred with Burt (Deerman) recently. At Ohio National Poultry show in November, Deerman met us in Columbus to spend the day looking at birds with us and catch up in person. When I was trying to convince Deerman to come up to the show, I told him "hey never know what you'll find". He replied that he didn't need to get any more animals. (he was thinning out his animal collection due to his recent health issues) Burt met us and we were in the parking lot walking into the show. Wouldn't you know it we walk by a truck with some folks sitting in the back with a cage that says "free hens". My wife and I continued in and I noticed Deerman had stopped and was talking to them. A few minutes later Deerman came in the show and told me he picked up the hens, cage and all, and bought two more hens also for $10. (Can't help us bird nerds and Deerman was definately one of us) He said he took them and put them in his truck. An hour or so later, Deerman went out to his truck to give the birds some water. He came back with a big smirk on his face and laughing. When he took the cage and set it in the truck, he had left the sign saying "free hens" unknowingly facing out and visible. Well someone got the free hens and the 2 paid for hens. Burt and our family got a nice laugh out of it. He wasn't mad, he just thought is was funny. That attitude is what made him awesome. (By the way he did go home with some pigeons that day so he was pretty happy)
We said our earthly goodbyes today but I know our guy, Deerman, will be watching over all his BYC friends to make sure they're doing well
