A "rescue" and now I'm a crazy chicken lady. - Page 2

What a lovely story! Thank you for sharing.

I got my second batch of chicks 3 years ago when I got serious about this chicken thing. I fell madly in love and stopped eating chicken meat and battery eggs almost immediately. They are such amazing creatures, I cannot support farming methods that harms them.

Enjoyed your story, chickens are far more intelligent than people think. I am vegetarian, I couldn't eat anything that can have an individual personality. There was a tv programme last year testing the intelligence of chickens, great viewing.

8 Silkies, 1 Silkie x, 2 Appenzeller x, 1 mix rooster, 2 elderly terrapins and a boyfriend.

Thanks! I feel so lucky! If those people hadn't left her I might never have discovered how awesome chickens are, and certainly wouldn't have met Heckles, the awesomest of all!

Yes - the first week we had Heckles I was totally broke but at the grocery store they have some cage free organic eggs and I splurged on those even though they cost more. I couldn't go back to buying the battery cage kind. I have been thinking a lot about all the egg and meat chickens - millions of them - that no one ever knew anything about, who were killed in their first year of life, who never once got to go outside. It breaks my heart. Someday I think I'd like to have my own chicken rescue.

Do you know what it was called or if it is available on youtube? I would love to watch it!

Sparkle, that's such a neat story.

Don't want to be the wet blanket but...I would hate for you to lose your sweet girl before her time - if your chickens are unsupervised while they're ranging they could easily become coyote food.  I lost my beloved RIR last week to a coyote and all I did was run in to turn on the coffee maker.

Chickens are wonderful pets.  Glad you found each other :)

Whoever said don't count your chickens before they're hatched clearly never tried to count chickens after they're hatched.

They free-range in my fenced yard which is about 1/2 an acre (I guess that's not 100% free range but they have tons of room). Heckles can get over the fence which is only about 3 feet high so we are in the process of building a taller fenced-in area on the other side of our property that she will not be able to escape as easily. At night they all sleep in their hutch so there is no chance that a coyote can get at them at night but it is definitely a legitimate concern because there are many coyotes around here.

I did the same thing. Well I already was a vegetarian but never ever will I buy eggs from the store again. I am also trying to stay away from foods that use eggs as an ingredient because I do not know where the eggs came from. The other day at work someone brought in donuts and without even thinking I grabbed one and took a bite. I immediately realized that donuts have egg in them and I felt guilty for the rest of the day. some people think I'm nuts but I honestly feel sorry for them because they're missing out on the fantastic joy of owning and loving chickens!
