Need help with my idea for cleaning out my ducks' kiddie pool

Hello all!

I've had a kiddie pool for my ducks now for a couple of weeks and already am tired of having to bail out the water by hand/bucket.  So, I came up with an idea that emulates the gravel vacuum I use to clean my fish tanks.  I thought that I could cut the bottom off of a 2-liter pop bottle and screw the garden hose onto the pop bottle and then just do with the pool as I would with my fish tank.  This would allow me to water trees/garden or whatever with the pool water without having to dig holes or make any permanent changes.   However, I had one issue with this idea.  When I put the 2-liter bottle on the hose, I didn't get a tight seal, and it leaked water. 

 

To make my idea work, I need a tight seal between the 2-liter bottle and the hose.  Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could accomplish that?  It seems like the threads on the bottle were too large for the threads on the hose, but the sizes were compatible.  I really like this idea, so any help on getting it to work would be greatly appreciated!

Sometimes I can use pipe insulation (for preventing pipes from sweating in summertime), which is cylindrical, to wrap a hose and compress it for a custom but not professional gasket.

I hope you can do it , I have no ideas not very savvy in these departments but I like the idea of recycling the water ..

I have about 20 Mature Hens and Roosters Different Breeds (RIR's, EE's, OEGB, Buff Orp.'s)  and approximately 60 Chicks different ages and a large variety adding more constantly (Jersey Giants, Black Australorp, White leghorn, Buff Orps.'s RIR and mixed bred), Three Dogs One Pure Bread Doxie two mixed Breeds, 4 Ducks (2 white Peking, One Muscovy, One mixed breed)2 baby Mallard chicks , 2...

Many years ago while working for the phone company we used to have a tape that had a backing on it. What you did was peel off the backing, stretch it onto it self and it would form a solid, watertight mass.

 

However I do have another suggestion. I use a wet-and-dry shop vacuum to suck the water and effluvia out.

Use a shopvac, pond pump with a hose, or... Duck tape a piece of hose to a bottle. A smaller water bottle may be easier to handle than a giant 2 litre even if you cut it down. Just a thought.

Modify this idea that is used to make small hydroponic systems. 

 

Instead of using a T, just use a strait connector and you can get a fitting at the hardware store that will adapt the coupling to a hose fitting.

This is what I was looking for!  Thank you!  However, I'm not real great with names...  Can you tell me what the PVC piece is called that the lid of the 2-liter bottle goes into?  Is that a "PVC insert"?   What diameter of PVC is used?  1 inch?

I think that its just a piece of PVC pipe cut really short.  My advice would be to grab a 2 liter cap and take it to the hardware store with a printout of that picture.  Poke around the PVC pipe and you should find what you need in either 3/4 inch or 1 inch PVC coupling.  an employee will be happy to help.  They often have to rig things for people, so It wont be anything they haven't seen before.  If you plan on having fish in the pond, be careful what glues you use.  Fish tank silicone caulk can be found in most pet stores and it works great as a glue too.  If your not intending fish, it doesn't matter what you use.

 

I made a water barrel out of a cheap garbage can.  The employee grabbed me everything I needed for the hose Assembly.  Things from 5 different isles.  None of it was meant to work together, but it works great.
