To cull or not to cull?

Hi all,

So we have 2 roosters, Pop-tart (some type of game mix) and Titan (Rhode island red). Well about a month or so ago we finally added a run onto our coop & not too long after we noticed that Pop-tart was running Titan all over & trying to, I don't know, claim territory over the run area I guess. Pop-tart is attacking Titan and making him stay as far from him as possible. Titan started dropping weight, which he did the 1st time we ever put him & Pop-tart together. I thought it was due to stress but I wondered if he was actually getting to eat. The past few times I've went in the coop to check food, etc. Titan has run in after me & started chowing down. So today I was filling the feeders & here comes Titan with Pop-tart right on his heels and chases him right back out into the run & stands on the ramp in front of the door and starts crowing! Needless to stay I shoved him right off of there! somad.gif

My husband and I are wondering if we should just cull Pop-tart & by cull I mean kill. He seems to always be picking on Titan but keeping him from eating is a whole other story and to be perfectly honest Titan is a much better rooster than Pop-tart. He treats the ladies very well & lets them have treats, whereas Pop-tart steals the ladies treats and pecks at them when eating their regular food. I am just over this rooster & I do hate to kill him but I don't know of anyone he could go to & I also don't trust anyone not to fight him b/c of his game background. He's also shown a little aggression towards my 4 yr old. I used to feel safe leaving her in there while I get the water and stuff but now that he has his spurs and has "sized her up" a few times I just don't trust him. I love him but I don't want to be dealing with an arrogant little rooster. Any advice would be great! Thank you guys!

He's showing aggression to your child? It's a no-brainer. Eat him. droolin.gif

A game rooster is very unlikely to share the flock with another rooster - just the nature of the breed.  Top that with aggression towards your child - off with his head.

Thanks everyone for your responses! He has shuffled his feet towards her a few times and rushed her so yeah I think that would be aggression, however this is my 1st flock and I'm still learning. I feel he just aggravates the whole flock and I've felt like he should go for awhile, guess I just needed the support of others & to make sure I wasn't jumping any guns. He is right at a year old, is he too tough to eat?

It doesn't cost any more to feed a good rooster than a bad one. Adios amigo.

Home of the world's cutest dachshund, one crazy blue heeler, two cats,
one fat pony, and many (but not too many!) chickens

Can anyone tell me, how many are too many chickens?

Shouldn't be too tough if you cook him for a long time - just get a crockpot recipe and go for it!

We have a dozen different breeds of chickens and we love them all!

It's hard to let one go but when I saw my male turkey pluck the feathers off of my poor Norma's (the polish) head... he was gone!

I would have done it sooner if it was one of the kids but Norma is close enough :)

Mother of: 2 wonderful stepsons, 1 RR, 2 Barred Rocks, 1 Americana, 1 Buff Cochin, 1 Buff Wyandotte, 3 Amazing Polish (one golden laced, one white crested and one cuckoo) and 1 Buff Brahma.
