Ventilation Questions

Ok, we are building our coop and I have a few questions on ventilation... We live in Southeastern NC and have hot & humid summers. As you can see from the pics below, our metal roof will be raised about 3 1/2" to provide ventilation from the top; we are going to put a door within a door on the front and back openings with hardware cloth so they can be propped open; we are going to cover the top opening in the front with wire and cut an opening in the side above the chicken door. Do y'all think that's adequate or do we need to cut holes on either side of the doors for vents? Suggestions appreciated wink.png

Also, our chicks are 1 1/2 weeks old, I thought I'd be okay with the whole chickens in the house thing, but I'm really not hmm.png ...I can deal with it for a few more weeks I guess... So, my question is, in my climate ( 70's & 80's during the day and 50's & 60's at night, and getting warmer) when would it be appropriate to put them in the coop?

Thanks!

How many birds? how big is the coop? that does sound like the ventilation will be good. Wait in till your chicks have there feathers, you are looking at prob around five weeks to be able to go out there.

It's OK to not be OK with the "whole chicks in the house thing."  LOL

We never brood indoors.   It's nice to see someone nearing completion of their coop while their chicks are a couple weeks old instead of a couple months old.  Chickens grow up fast, from hatch to mating in as little as 17 weeks.   Nice coop setup.

There are several REALLY good threads on here about ventilation.

I think one might be a sticky under the learning section or maybe under coops.  Generally, for us southerners, there can never be too much. I think that the only hard and fast rules are: fresh air in low / stale air out high and never blowing on the roost.

Joe.G, we have 4 chicks and the coop is 4'x4' with a 10'x4' run, thanks for responding!

Fred, thank you, too! I have really valued your input on the OT thread big_smile.png , I actually just reposted this over there to see what advice I can get.
