So my silkie finally started laying eggs, YAY!!!! She's been in with my silkie rooster too. I took the first 7 home to incubate and 6 hatched.  However, I think there might be a problem...

I'm not a genetics expert, but I'm fairly certain that you can't take this:

And combine it with this:

And get this???

Both black ones look just like a silkie should.

All 4 yellow and black spotted ones have 5 toes, furry feet, but their skin isn't a true black, more yellow-gray ish...

I think my other rooster snuck in at some point... ???

When i had my hen hatch eggs she had 5...and they don't look a thing like her,or the rooster! She is A completely white hen and the roo is also mainly white.Yet we have 2 brown,1black and white, and 2 red!smile.png

I know, that's how my goats always are with their babies. :)

But still... 4 yellows???? It HAS to be my other rooster, unless one of my silkies has a white of buff ancestor somewhere...

Did your silkies come from a hatchery? If so, that's probably the reason for the odd colored chicks....

yes they did, idk which one though.

I guess when their feathers come in i'll be finding out who the daddy is... since the other option is my mutt rooster who must have snuck in...??? He's orange...

recessive gene might of come thru, i know it happens alot with button quails, they don't really breed true.
