Here's my six unsexed chicks at 3 weeks. I know this may be too early but I am posting these pics with comments about posture, and will repost in a couple weeks when their combs start to develop more.

 

FYI,I was told they are americana's but I am starting to wonder if they are mutts/easter eggers

 

#1 - Pretty sure it is a girl by nature lets call her goldie for now

#2 lets call 'him' the golden boy. Comb is the largest of the lot with defined ridges, walks upright, very dominant. Will be surprised if a girl

#3 this is the darkest one, with little other colouring, very calm and easiest to take being held. Posture is very horizontal and feminine

 

3-all black, smallest.JPG

 

#4 This one has colouring on shoulders that reminds me of a bared rock. Lets call her/him a rockette. Posture is more upright but not certain of this one. could go either way.4, rockette.JPG

#5This one, lets call 'her' buffy. Had her colour come out of nowhere. Used to be just as dark as #3 no definate posture, sometimes up and other times down.

#6, this last one is 'lefty'. I put a tag on his left foot because he was the one who ALWAYS walked upright. He, and #2 were the first to go after worms and the game of 'keep away' still primarilly involves these two and #5.

Definately too soon, but what do you think?

Here;s a pic of the group huddled in the corner. Left to right are: 4, 6, 1, 3, 2, & 5.

 

Notice golden boy and Left totally upright, while rocky demonstrates the more horizontal femine pose.

EEs have pea combs.  All three rows of peas enlarge with males and only the center row with females.  By this reasoning I don't see any changes in the combs which are suspicious.  But the dead give away is the mahogany patches which develop on the wings between 6-8 wks of age.  PS - do your chicks have the green legs of an EE (I noticed #1 does not).  I know its hard to wait, but you only have a few weeks to go

I think #4 is a roo. I know we have all been told that EE's have green legs but i just got rid of a rooster that was hatched from a blue egg and his legs were yellow/red like a leg horn. I fact he looked a lot like a mutt leghorn. I let him breed with one of my Wheaten  Ameraucana hens and hatched a dark black chick with pure black legs. They all look like a pee comb except #3. Maybe its just the angle but it looks like a walnut comb.

Father to 4 kids. 1 male Chihuahua.2 male Tabby cats 1 Tiger Salamander. Lots of fish and a bunch of chickens, pure and mixed.

Lsg, I had heard that about rows before. Just to be certain, are the 'rows'when you are looking face to face and there is just one column?

They all have dark, dark legs, except for the light ones.

#4 hasn't been on my radar for being a boy, but at this point it's still anyone's guess, just two more weeks till it can be more certain

I'll have to agee that right now they all look like pullets.

There is something about #2 though that makes me think rooster maybe.  Maybe in a couple of weeks Ill be able to tell better.

The "peas" are in 3 rows (I guess technically columns if youre saying they are vertical and rows are horizontal.  But I guess that I think of peas all lined up in a row) for the males and the females.  You can see 3 "columns" in each, but the female's center column becomes more prominent over time (a ridge forms), while the male's entire comb enlarges (all 3 columns). I think this is only "true" for early in development, because it seems to me it all sort of evens out in the end (with the exception of the roos comb just being plain bigger than the hens).  In the chick below you can see all 3 columns of peas, I think the center peas are always a bit bigger.  I don't know if any of that rambling even answered your quesion.

Looks to me like #s 5&6 are pullets, 3&4 cockerels, and I can't tell on 1&2. #4 has classic coloring for an EE boy (black/white) and #3 has a wide comb with three prominent rows.

Laying: 2 Partridge Rocks, 1 Columbian Wyandotte and 2 Black Australorps. 14 weeks: 3 bantam Araucana.
Cowed to chicken math and sharing my bedroom with 8 BBS Ameraucana mixes.
