I used to have a pair in my aviary many years ago and they were so sweet and tame.

I always wanted more, but I would like to keep a group, and everything I read says they can only be kept in pairs or they will fight.

I would love about 20 of the little things, different colours, running around my large aviary floor.  Is it possible to have a group of females and a few males, or will the males always kill each other?

i'm sure if you had enough space, you could keep a ratio(i would make it large tho like, 1:4/5) aviary would probably work as long as there was enough space and ground cover

that speckle female looks awesome

That's actually a MAJOR misconception. We currently house 30-40 button quail together with no issues. Button quail are actually very social group birds. They like to be together in 4 or more. Males do not usually fight. Sometimes you will have one that is smaller or weaker get picked on but this is more rare than common. The key is to have enough space...we have ours in about a 50 gallon glass aquarium. We do have a few aviarys too where we house as you said three females to one male. So it really does work in your favor to keep the female ratio higher than males. Tomorrow I will post some pics of how we have ours set up so you all can see what I'm talking about. The speckled are my favorite :)

there are no rare breeds in buttons. the last wild ones were recorded over ten years ago in China so the ones we have are all descendants of them in some way. When you hatch eggs you never know what colors will be in the clutch. and I believe they are happier in pairs...but if you have enough room in a single aviarie you could keep more than one pair just so they have territory to call home.
