Hello everyone! I'm new to raising chickens, in fact I don't have any yet. My husband and I want to have a few hens for eggs and teaching our daughter more responsibility. I have always wanted chickens but as a city girl didn't know where to start. Now that I have found this site, I'm confident that we could do it! Being in Ohio (Summit County) I worry a bit about our cold winters and how that will effect our hens (when we get some). I found some tips on this site for keeping the girls warm in winter, so now my mind is at ease.

I would appreciate any tips that may help us get started!

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan :D

While there are those who provide heat sources for their birds, this is usually a mistake. If you get hardy breeds and provide them with a ventilated draft free coop they will tolerate cold weather quite well. We often get temperatures below 0 and I have never had a single bird get frostbite or any other cold related issues.

Google The Henderson chicken chart for a good resource looking at cold hardiness, temperament, and laying ability.

Hello to this thread. From Summit county and just trying to network with other chicken owners from the area...if they exist!

Anybody?
