molting or depressed duck--with a happy ending

I am having a very sad and difficult female duck. I had her mate, Apple here in my yard with, Eve who is sitting on a nest of 16 eggs. She has about a week to go. Apple was attacked and killed two days ago by my neighbors cat. Eve saw the attack and was found by her dead mate in shock. She is on her nest in the brooder. She will not eat, drink or come out. Should I gently take her out? Try to feed her? I am so sad for my sweet girl.

Hi, I have absolutely no experience with this... but after reading this whole thread, it seems that broody ducks do what they need to do. I understand that your duck has been traumatized, but I wouldn't try to make her do anything she doesn't want to. How about putting some feed and water right by her so that she doesn't have to get up? And how about mixing in some vitamins/electrolytes into the water?

Like I said, I don't know a thing about broody ducks nor do I know anything about traumatized ducks who have lost their mate. Just trying to get some new ideas out there.

P.S. I see it's been a few days since this post. How's she been doing?

Can you give her some eggs to sit on? That helped my girl. She wouldn't accept a new friend but loved her baby (turned out to be a drake & since I bought the egg he was not related to her). The next year they had two daughters and are very happy together.
Good luck!

Please Help! We are the new proud owner of a Moscovy female. She was dropped off a few months back. Everything was going normal long day trips to the pond coming and going for food. Very active. Now for the past few days she has taken up residence in the barn eaves, It's too high for me to get up and inspect whats going on, but there seems to be lots of feathers and SHE is only coming down once a day to eat, swim clean up and poo. Then she flys back up. I can't tell if she is laying on eggs. I don't know what Broody means and I'm not sure what to do. Today was the 1st day she hasn't come down at all. She seems healthy and has a good attitude when she is down here, but it's only for 20minutes tops. Like I said today is 1st day she hasn't come down. Do I try and take her food and water? Someone please clue me in on this!

Sounds like someone is sitting on a nest full of eggs! That's broody. If she is coming down once or twice a day, make sure there is plenty of food and fresh water easily available for her, and let her sit, if you are okay with ducklings.

Can someone get up there with a ladder? Not too close, but to see if the nest is on something fairly secure. My nightmare would be ducklings falling.
