my pet chicken reviews

We ordered several chicks (2nd time from MPC) last summer and they're doing awesome and keeping us in eggs while the older gals get a break.
I've got 6 hatching eggs coming from them next week. 3 sex-link Easter eggers (Carolina blues) and 3 mystery eggs I added in. Hoping since I'm so close to Mansfield (3ish hours) that I don't have any problems with them! Adding these 6 to about 2 dozen from my flock and my mom's that I'll be incubating for a Valentine's hatch.

I ordered 9 Breeder's Choice eggs, and 3 mystery eggs. Out of the 12 total eggs, only ONE hatched. I used a highly recommended incubator, kept at the appropriate humidity and temperature. I candled the eggs, and only one showed appropriate development, and another showed a blood spot showing some development. The others showed no significant development. I called my only chick "Uno," but I should have called him $77.40 because that's the cost of my ONE Chick. The quality of the eggs is highly questionable. All in all, it was a waste of 3 weeks. Good luck!

I wish I could say I had a good experience with My Pet Chicken. I was naive and thought oh, that’s a cute name, let’s order from them! Stupid! I ordered 3 for delivery last May, then my Husbands co worker shamed me for not ordering an even number, for the buddy system. I hurried and ordered 3 more for delivery 3 weeks after my first shipment.
Nearly a year later, and with much heartbreak I am down to 1 hen now. They were all supposed to be vaccinated for Mareks, which they all died of. As a first time chicken owner, I had never heard of this disease, I now feel very versed on the subject, sadly. I wouldn’t wish this experience on even my worst enemy. I’m now looking into getting local pullets to keep my single hen company, and just hope with all my might that heartbreak doesn’t happen again.

The vaccine is only good on one strain of marek and isn't 100% effective. Also, they need COMPLETE quarantine(meaning isolation, showers in between, gowns, booties and gloves) for a minimum of 7 days or they will not be protected if exposed in that time. Any new chickens you bring it will be in danger if not quarantined.

when i first got chickens this time around....(had when my kids were little and they lived for 10 years and i knew NOTHING) i was hot to get all these breeds i HAD to have. i bought a pullet from a questionable person and within 6 most my whole flock except TWO died...8 birds. from mareks. fast forward to present day...that was 7 years ago...and i have birds dying again from mareks. all the ones who die are from hatcheries and had been vaccinated. the ones i hatched and vaccinated my self seem to go on and on. no one knows why...its heartbreaking. i send them to UC DAVIS for necropsies so i know what they die from. these birds are 3-6 years old...when they mount i rake up the feather daily. i seem to do things "right" but to no avail. that person knew she had mareks on her property and it was in bad condition. its on me for not turning around. i was told by UC DAVIS that they still GET mareks with the vaccine but they dont usually DIE from it...but mine have. it kind of ruined my chicken experience because i like to hatch my own and then of course they need homes....

I ordered 4 female chicks from my pet chicken and one turned out be a rooster. Since it was reported 2 weeks past the deadline they wouldn't do anything. I didn't realize they had a deadline. My rooster isn't crowing yet and I'm no chicken expert, and they didn't do anything. I gave them another chance and ordered 8 more female chicks from them. They are 3 weeks old and I'm pretty sure I didn't get the welsummer since the feather color doesn't match a welsummer. If you do order from them make sure you familiarize yourself with the deadlines and what your specific deadline will be. I've ordered from them twice and neither order did I get 100% what I ordered. I wonder the reason for the deadline. If you got it wrong, you got it wrong. The age of the bird shouldn't matter.

No - find a different hatchery. They do not stand behind teir chicks. I have raised multiple broods. Tried MyPetChicken for the first time, over half our order died in less than 5 days.

I just had 7 chicks delivered from My Pet Chicken a week ago, a few days later some started to twitch so I emailed MPC and they replied that it could be an electrolyte imbalance. I stopped putting vitamins in their water and gave them fresh water and all are doing great! I really like their customer service! A friend of mine ordered from Ideal Poultry and only wanted 8 hens, they told her that they were going to ship with 3 males free of charge for the added warmth but when her box arrived it had 9 extra roosters in it. So not only did she have to feed all 17 until she knew which were roos but had to find them a home too. So I think the shipping price is worth it from MPC so you get exactly what you ordered.
You can decline the roo packing peanuts! I never get that. Have ordered many times from ideal. I like their order desk folks. Dry responsive, good selections etc. my pet chicken is too far away from me.

Chiming in since I don't think I've ever posted here
I've had a decent experience with MPC, having ordered a total of 2 batches of 6 bantams since MPC is the only place that I know of that offers sexed bantams. Of these, all ended up being correctly sexed (though one died within the first 24 hours, so I'm not so sure about that one). Can't speak on the Marek's situation since my flock are carriers but the only ones that were vax'd have never shown any signs of it.
My biggest gripe would either come down to my bad luck or possibly poor breeding. Out of the 12 total chicks I've ordered, not one, but TWO of them developed severe scissor beak (first one was a polish bantam, second was a d'Uccle). It was so painful to watch them slowly suffer; they were half the size of the members of their same breed. Both ended up passing away.
On their website, MPC has said that 1 in 100 of their chicks develop scissor beak. I can excuse this happening the first time, but when we ordered again and got another severe case of scissor beak, I started to wonder if this really was bad luck or something else. I know MPC is a middle man that sources from Meyer so I guess Meyer would be more to blame. I want to look through this thread now to see if anyone else has had this problem with Meyer/MPC.
