Actual Dark Cornish aren't at all like the cornish crosses that they sell as meat birds. They actually can make very good layers of smallish eggs and are excellent at free range. I think they are beautiful birds, so I wouldn't be dissapointed if that was what you end up with.
yes, cornish Xs are bred to only live long enough to make a good meal, they will get so heavy that their hearts can't take it anymore. Dark Cornish, while very good eating, are a much leaner bird that seems small until you pick one up. They should live as long as any chicken and lay pretty decently for you.
