SICK CHICKEN: Eye closed

Glad to hear your Antibiotic treatment is working out for you. Do you know the strength? Tetracycline is a very cheap A/B (human form that is) and would be nice to keep around.

Just recently one of my 6 week olds started with runny/swollen eye then it started to bubble, after 4 injections of Tylan 50 all the symptoms went away, gonna give her one more shot just to be on the safe side.

The strength is just one capful - thinking about 1 teaspoon - per gallon of water. And directions say to make fresh batch every 24 hours. The bag I got at the feedstore should last awhile. Actually, I bought this about 6 months ago and had it on hand. I'm glad I did, because the two feed stores near my house were out of the product when I tried to get another bag.

Now am just wondering what to do with Rosie. She definitely doesn't like being in the bathroom anymore and seems pretty healthy as of tonight. Feel like she's ready to go back to the chicken yard, at least in a pen. Just don't want to end up regretting letting her back with the rest of the flock if this turns out to be something serious.

We'll see how she is and I feel tomorrow morning before work.
 
Tests came back positive for mycoplasma. Still gurgling. Otherwise healthy. Vet said keep her isolated on tetracycline for one more week.

Meanwhile am nursing a chick that was all but killed by my Astralorp hen. Serious pecking to the head. Don't know if chick will make it.

Son in tears.

This backyard chicken rearing is rough.
 
Vet says I can put her back in flock once treatment finished. However, feel very nervous about this as other hens haven't had symptoms. Suppose it's likely already in flock, but concerned reintroducing hen confirmed with Mycoplasma could make there's sick.

Opinions? Experience to share?
 
My Welsummer was given the OK by the vet to go back to the coop with the rest of the flock this Saturday. So she's done with her antibiotics and back outside with the rest of the ladies. I was told that this isn't something that we've cured, but rather an illness that we are managing. So far, the other chickens are doing fine.

We are all so glad to have Rosie back outside and out of the bathroom!
 
i need help right away 3 of my chickens are sick! one of them already died. they have their eyes closed and when they open them sometimes there is this vary thick liquid in their eyes i need help soon or all of them will be dead! please and thank you
 
hi happyma.. please keep up the good work, posting what you find about your "sick eye chicken". I too have an 8 month old welsummer, she's a great biddy but came up with one eye closed and n unhappy, lethargic look about her. I'm worried and you can help. thanks

Put some neosporin on the eye and then she opened it. Looks a little goopy. She's perked up since her eye open and broke out of the pen I made her. So there's definitely still some life in her. Walking is fine. She sounds a little like she has a stuffy beak/congestion.

Wondering if I should get her some antibiotics?

I had similar issue with my 3 yr. old Astrolorpe hen. I bought Veteran Plus Antibiotic Opthalmalic Gel. She started having improvement the next day. Her eye was closed, but I was able to squirt a small amount on her eye. I didn't want to get too close and was able to squeeze the bottle, so no harm and she gets a dose 2x day. Her eye is now open and cloudiness is going away. She is out with her sisters foraging again. I was able to find the gel at several stores, Petco, PetSmart, and Tractor Supply. Good size bottle, blue with white spout. I had difficulty getting the foil off, it got stuck in the cap. Cost $18 to 22.
