How much does it weigh?  I know women who pay big bucks for wool to spin.

Kristen,

Your shearer may not have much experience with "good" wool but Shetland is some of the most prized for hand spinners. Not uncommon to get 10 dollars a lb. for it.

Check out http://www.shetland-sheep.org. You can find breeders close to you on there.

We have a small flock of  40 head and they are nothing like the commerical breeds.
Smart, good mothers, easy keepers. If you are ever near Columbus, OH. you are welcome to stop by and check them out. Same goes for anybody else. My daughter is very proud of them and loves to talk livestock.

Thanks John, I have 2 shetlands now and about 15 others that are various breeds.  I L-O-V-E my 2 shetlands and we want to get rid of the other commercial ones and get all shetlands, just for pets.   Everybody lives so far away from us that has any for sale.  I am not interested in registered sock or great wool producers, I just like the breed.

I've seen Shetland fleece going for $10/lb "in the grease".

I paid $5 for 4 oz of shetland roving.  I can't even imagine burning wool.

You could always sell on ebay... the buyer pays shipping and it might pay for a couple bags of feed at least.

or you could start spinning!

I have Shetland sheep for sale - central Illinois (Champaign area). We have 8 new lambs born in May/June 2012 for sale - five males, three ewes. We also have the ram who fathered these lambs for sale as well as a wether. Great looking sheep. We are keeping the six ewes to start again next fall. Also have a lot of wool - unwashed to sell.

Sorry not near you but I breed them. I'm IN Shetland. :)

I've found a lot of Shetland sheep contacts through Facebook. I have picture of nearly all my sheep on there and update the whole time.

59 Shetland sheep (+34 lambs), 4 Shetland ponies, 10 Ixworths and 14 mixed breed chickens (+14 chicks), 8 Shetland ducks (_ 1 duckling), 3 Muscovies, 1 Border Collie, 2 cats, 5 goldfish, more to come.

All named, full of character and loved dearly.
