Why have a parrot when you can have a chicken?

We have a little light brahma who has decided her favorite place to perch is on a shoulder. (Should be interesting when she's at full growth!) It's occurred to me that chickens are superior to parrots in virtually every respect.

1. Chickens cost $4 instead of $1,000.
2. Chickens don't have to live in your house.
3. Chicken feed is cheaper than parrot food.
4. A chicken peck isn't as painful as being chomped by a parrot.
5. Chickens don't talk back.
6. Even a rooster is quieter than a parrot!
7. Chickens eat bugs. Parrots are too picky for that!
8. You can eat the chickens' eggs.
9. You can eat the chickens. (I won't, but you might.)


Can anyone else think of something more?

I agree whole heartedly. I have a bantam cochin that loves to sit on my shoulder, or head.

Chickens are fare more entertaining to watch than parrots!
 
I like parrots. I've never had a chicken talk to me in my own language. Oscar has quite the personality and loves nothing more than to throw his voice and pretend to be somebody lost out in the woods.



I like chickens. While they can't say, Hello, How are you? What? NO! and so forth, I like the way a chicken is content to sit in your lap.

I can think of more! Chickens' beaks are straight, so in the case of an accidental bite, a chicken bite won't hurt as much compared to a parrot's hooked beak, which can do far more damage than a chicken's straight beak. Also, chickens can't bite as hard as a parrot. Think of how much more it's going to hurt getting bitten by a parrot compared to getting bit by a chicken!

Plus, chickens are precocial, so you don't have to feed them constantly day and night like you would with an altricial bird, like a parrot! And if you're uncomfortable having a bird fly crazily around your house, a chicken would make a better choice than a parrot. Chickens spend most of their time on foot (they don't fly very often, normally just a short, but quick burst of flight), compared to parrots when they fly pretty frequently!
