What did you do in the garden today?

It's so nice to have an option for sandwiches.

Ha! It's funny you say that—here in the next couple of weeks our pastor wants to do a "bring your lunch" thing so we can all hang out and enjoy lunch together after service, and of course he mentioned sandwiches. "Who eats sandwiches anymore?" I asked my husband (who sensibly pointed out that burgers are, in fact, sandwiches...I do love a good burger...difficult to bring in to church, though!). (Knife and fork burgers, all the way.) (You can fit more goodies onto the burger that way!)

Was that a dahlia? GORGEOUS!

The entertainment for yesterday was produced by my little golden girls. So Goldie Locks, apparently found a dead (hopefully) baby toad. The three little ladies chased around for at least 15 minutes trying to capture the dead toad from Goldie Locks.

Love it! They are so entertaining. A green leaf fell into the run this afternoon while we were visiting the birds and they chased each other all over the run for the sake of that single leaf! We suspect it's because it is a differently-shaped leaf than the maple leaves that they tend to get in there.

Bit envious of your okra. Love the stuff but have never gotten it to go far. Next year, next year...

I am envious of your litter, so far our cinnamons have only had 6 at a time.

Actual cinnamon rabbits exist? As in...cinnamon buns?

My life is now complete because of this knowledge. Thank you.

(Also, that is very smart to try and get two does pregnant at once...that's something to keep in mind for our future hopes.)

They're incredible really. On Tuesday when the smoke here was the worst and with scary rumors flying, they were cruising throughout the town keeping an eye on things and helping to keep things calm.

That's wonderful. Our volunteer FD is amazing as well, I love those guys. Truly courageous men. Glad you're doing all right—I am praying rain comes to knock out these fires!

Actually, saw this AM that multiple arsonists are being charged—quite a few of these fires are being started intentionally. Somewhere up near you the PD found that someone had been going after the wire poles with first an axe, then a chainsaw—they are really trying to get wires down! Terrible. Evil, actually.

On a happier note...need that zuc soup recipe! And your sunchokes are so *pretty*! I had no idea.

@igorsMistress, are you feeling any better? I hope so. Good luck with your climbing rose, it looks happy thus far! The garden looks fab!

And who does this? Good grief. At least *try* to responsibly rehome them! Argh! We've had people offer us Muscovy ducklings and a SLW roo in the past five or so months...both times we've had to say no, but they were trying, and they were also very happy to hear that rehoming via BYC and other places is an option. Goodness!!!

That said: Pretty birds! The coloring is really neat, with those dashes of pale gold amongst the white!

You are dead on about irresponsible dog owners. They are the wooooooorrrrrst. Also, dangerous.

Good luck getting rid of the jasmine, @oldhen2345. Invasives are...well, just that. :/

How are the kits, @drstratton? They are so cute! You are right, they make quite the tangle in the nest. ;)

Hope your arm is better, @WthrLady. Ouch! :( Seems to me that sometimes animals all act bizarre for no discernible reason...something in the air, maybe? Our first frost date is now less than 30 days off...*sad sigh* No doubt everyone here gets it so far as your feelings about that!

What green bean varieties did you grow this year, @Acre4Me? Also, making marshmallows is such fun. Plus nearly everyone loves them! A true treat, especially compared to the store stuff in a bag.

Not too much in the garden today. Have been gathering the last smattering of tomatoes. Our nights are also getting cooler, quite a bit cooler in fact, and things have been slowing down. Also picked one pepper! I'll take it! ;) The beets I sowed last week are already popping up! So are some of the greens! Yay! Oh, and this afternoon I found that one of the snow pea seeds I sowed into a container behind some nasturtium and marigold is popping up. The container is in a pretty sheltered spot on our porch...They may make it. We'll see. I sowed the seeds a couple of weeks ago. If nothing else, the blooms are pretty!

Also gathered still more flower seeds. Never will I stop being delighted over the fact that nasturtium seed look like tiny brains.

Look at this—Paul Robeson, just over a pound! ❤ ❤ ❤

Few more Green Zebras. These plants are actually doing really well. Also these are delicious tomatoes!

I really do love reading about everyone's canning exploits! A little sad I don't have enough to put up and—well, actually, I'm a little irritated that I cannot go to the farmer's market to get what is necessary to make up the difference. But we have been enjoying all of the sun-fresh produce, and that's a big part of gardening! I was pretty upset about it 'til Hubby reminded me of all of the things we've dealt with this year, from surgeries to wildlife raids...that's life. (Gardening really is a passion for me so to fail so miserably this year—difficult.) At least with winter there will be citrus to turn into marmalade, plus it is almost time for cranberry-jalapeno jelly. (Great on Christmas ham!) Most of those things I cannot grow here anyhow. ;)

Oh! Hubby keeps asking me to decide on a layout for the final BIG veggie garden! (There may or may not be a file folder with a dozen possibilities.) It will be ginormous, built in stages. We'll probably hire my friend's teen sons to help again. Or just bribe them with pizza and homemade pulled pork. ;) It'll be all raised beds. I'm so excited! He also suggested we build raised beds for roses and other ornamental pretties, which makes me happy. Obviously COVID panic put the brakes on a lot but now we can slowly get back to work again.

Happy gardening and putting up, all! I'd actually also love to see your favourite canning recipes. Is it possible to have too many?

@NightingaleJen thank you for the compliments. The new girls really are pretty when they aren’t trying to get away lol. I feel exactly as you do, nothing to put up and not happy about it. Next year will be better for both is us. Lucy reminds me of our cat Petnbite, such a love! Matilda not being as mad as she looks made me giggle!

OMG that sounds amazing! Please do post pictures when they are done.

i will
green bean varieties did you grow this year,

in my July planted bed, I planted 4 varieties. Best one has been “Jade” green bean. The feed store carries it in bulk and sells out. I can see why. A close second was “Blue Lake 47” a Burpee seed I bought in packets from the garden section of a big box store. The other two were “French Filet” types -but not very impressed. They are fine, but compared to the top 2, I wouldn’t grow them again. In addition, the “Fantastic Filet” went from just ready to seedy overnight. Both French Filet types were Burpee seed packs bought at big box store

Plus nearly everyone loves them! A true treat,

Yes. Marshmallows are fun to make. Usually vanilla or colored vanilla (like school colors) for kids to take in. But, I’ll be adding peppermint candy flavoring to these. It is the LorAnn flavors sold in Walmart cake section, so a 1 dram bottle per recipe. I’ve also made Raspberry ones (using LorAnn raspberry flavor) and they were amazing with hot chocolate. I’ve also added 1 Hawaiian Punch drink packet (any flavor) per recipe to get a sweet/tart flavored marshmallow - fun to have every now and again.

It'll be all raised beds.

we did this -we have 11 raised beds, although they are only 1 ft tall, but nice to have raised beds!

That sounds so exciting! Be sure to make arrangements for drip or other auto watering systems, I don't have them yet but we should be able to add them this fall or winter.
And Matilda the EE, also because why not. She's not as angry as she looks.
I really love EE, those faces are just too funny.
Actually, saw this AM that multiple arsonists are being charged—quite a few of these fires are being started intentionally.
Not sure myself, there are so many false rumors and poorly researched (news stations not doing due diligence on sources) that I am cautious about believing reports of arson.
On a happier note...need that zuc soup recipe!
Glad to help there. This recipe was from https://www.skinnytaste.com/cream-of-zucchini-soup-1-ww-point/
Cream of Zucchini Soup

Ingredients

1/2 small onion (quartered)
2 cloves garlic
3 medium zucchini (skin on cut in large chunks)
32 oz reduced sodium Swanson chicken broth (or vegetable)
2 tbsp reduced fat sour cream
kosher salt and black pepper to taste fresh grated parmesan cheese if desired for topping (optional)

1. Combine chicken broth, onion, garlic and zucchini in a large pot over medium heat and bring to a boil.
2. Lower heat, cover, and simmer until tender, about 20 minutes.
3. Remove from heat and purée with an immersion blender, add the sour cream and purée again until smooth.
4. Taste for salt and pepper and adjust to taste. Serve hot.
Printed from Skinnytaste: https://www.skinnytaste.com/cream-of-zucchini-soup-1-ww-point/
YIELD: 4 servings

You can easily stop just before adding the sour cream (or greek yogurt) and freeze it for finishing later. It's delicious!

Awe what a handsome boy! We had a cat named Bandit a long time ago, sweet little girl.

I finally processed all my hot peppers I got behind on. Red Cayennes were cut into tiny rings and placed in jars with Apple Cider Vinegar. I eventually separate the peppers and the vinegar using the Peppers on tacos and such instead of unhealthy brand name taco sauces. I use the hot Vinegar to mix with my extreme hot pepper ferments (which include fruits) and make a tangy yet very hot sauce and I freeze them because that's a lot of hot sauce I made and may take years to eat it all. The Green Cayennes (which I had an abundance of from cutting back my Cayennes to go in the greenhouse this winter) were sliced in half and put in ziplock freezer bags so I can throw them into crockpot meals... usually beans. My Jalapeños were red and cut up just like the Cayenne peppers and froze for the same purpose. Took me hours because I had so many I picked in the last 3 days. Oh yeah I also rubbed my eyes after I finished lol. I need to make another ferment because I picked a Ghost Pepper (which is still flowering and producing massive amounts of fruits) and a Carolina Reaper (winding down production)... I put those in brine with tropical fruit chunks and make a hot sauce out of them. This is my first year fermenting and i am finding that it makes for some great hot sauces. I can taste the fruit flavor but its not sweet after fermenting. The Tangy sensation from the Apple Cider Vinegar that I soaked Cayenne Peppers goes so well with the fruit flavor. Super Hot sauces too. I might have to break out the Deep Fryer and buy potatoes just to have French Fries to have with these sauces.
