What did you do in the garden today?

Apparently here's the thunderstorm I have been waiting for. It is raining buckets and the tornado alarm went off just a bit ago, waking us up and getting us to hunker down in the den comfortably as we contemplate going down one more half flight to the basement (not comfortable and kids are trying to sleep). Have a good night all!

Yep, be careful what you ask for. Hope everything came out OK and everyone safe. I remember a few nights like that down in the basement riding out a storm when I was much younger. Memories....

It was soft, almost mushy soft, I didn't like the texture. That's what everyone said, tart & it wasn't tart at all. But then again I LIKE rhubarb without sugar. :gig I had read that you can harvest them early/before ripe & they have more pectin for canning so I was thinking of just pulling them all & throwing them in the jam - they weren't tasty enough for me to pick & eat like I do with the blueberries.

Maybe I just got a bad one. An old BF of mine - the very first pistachio he ever ate was rancid so he spent half his life hating pistachios, he never understood why people would eat them. Then he tried them again & it all made sense. :gig Maybe that was my first gooseberry story & I should try another. :D

I can eat gooseberries with yogurt only.

We are supposed to get up to an inch of rain today.... After 90+ degree temps for 10 days straight, we need the rain now. They said it was going to start around 7 AM. It's after 8 and still no rain. Now they are saying closer to 11 or noon. :fl So far it is raining pretty heavily to the north of us around the Missouri/Arkansas border. I REALLY hope it comes further south!!

My garden got a late start because we had a late frost this year. I actually started early in the greenhouse and was looking good until everything got froze right after I put it all in the dirt.
That was my problem too. I’m no where near harvesting anything. My zucchini, cucumber and melon plants are just past getting there first true leaves. My tomatoes were doing good until my son came over to help. He loaded up the raised bed with a foot or so of “dirt” from the chicken coop. ( straight chicken poop not well composted yet even though it had been building up for a year or more on the dirt floor). Several of my tomato plants are getting fried because of it. I’ll probably lose those. Plus he completely buried my little butterfly weed that was finally coming up from last year. They were only 2 to 3 inches tall. I tried to dig them back out. Found them once but then he buried them again. 😞I couldn’t find them the 2nd time. He has a brain injury so, it is what it is. He was trying to be careful but he no longer has a working short term memory so he doesn’t remember directions and does the best he can.

You have a longer season than many of us! You'll get something! Plant those seeds
I did plant all the seeds except a few I actually decided would be too much (kale n spinach). Idk why I didn't do just half of EVERYTHING!
Anyways now I need to get everything transplanted. I did a few last week in the cool mornings...but half of it doesn't look to survive.
Should I even fool with transplanting anything else? I have several types of lettuce n mixed greens that are overwbin small containers. Then still more cherry tomatoes!
I hate my brain doesn't work like it used to...seems when health went bad 10 yrs ago it took my brain with it and continues to more all the time!

Oh yeah, and I've been battling aphids & whiteflies on my tomatoes inside my hoop house. They seem to be really bad this year. I've been spraying with Neem oil & Castile soap almost daily. Hasn't deterred them so I switched up to Sevin which I reserve for only really BAD problems because I have a lot of concerns about the environment from it (almost as bad as Roundup in terms of environmental damage). It has slowed them down but within 2 days of spraying, they are back again. I've got Nasturtiums and Chives planted all around my tomatoes. Still hasn't deterred them....

Any ideas on what I should do next? I'm thinking of maybe making some habanero water and spraying THAT on my tomatoes.
