What did you do in the garden today?

My ducklings are enjoying the storm in their temporary pen... 😂 I think I'm going to start the integration process with my adult ducks this weekend. I'll put them in a "see but don't touch" section of the duck yard during the day and then put them back in the temporary pen at night.

My adult duck flock consists of a drake (Silver Appleyard) and 3 hens (Silver Appleyard and 2 Pekins). There's one boy and 3 girls in the new ducklings (Welsh Harlequin). I've heard stories about drakes killing the new ducklings, especially if any are males. My Pekins can be big bullies too... I'm feeling really nervous about the introduction...

This year is definitely bad for predators here. I'm also dealing with a pair of nesting hawks, along with foxes and now coons too. I know I've lost a couple of chicks. Not sure if or how many adults. I have around 70 chickens so I don't always know if someone is missing unless it would be one of my favorites. I haven't seen any feathers around though that might indicate an attack.

I HAD 20+ chickens and I did lose count but the hawks went for ALL of our favorites. There are a couple of young roosters that I'll need to rehome that I wouldn't have minded nature doing the hard part for me, but no, they always seem to go for the family favorites. 😑 I know they're just doing what nature does but they could at least help me out. lol

I finally sealed a deal for my house sale! I need time for paperwork but I hope to move by the end of this month. my new house require a lot of work but I hope I'll have enough time for my winter garden. thinking about a small green house so that I can start tomatoes and peppers in winter.

Congrats! That's so exciting!

You know... The neighbors used to have dozens of pigeons that would roost in their warehouse each night. I used to hear dozens of songbirds chirping in the barn of the other neighbors place that has chickens. And I used to see at least a dozen grackles in every parking lot in town. Now it's one or two in each of those cases.

I had been attributing the decline here at home to the three cats that now live outside, but now I'm not so sure.

Well I finally made significant progress on the tilapia pond, I finally got him here to do some actual work and b ring the missing parts. The pump is hooked up and is leaking in some places. I will need to buy some new pipes and stuff, .. the truck is in the repair shop now too, it got close to 60k miles on it, so it's THAT time, new tires, brakes are about out too, and while we are at it, shocks, wipers oil change ugh.. that's going to be about 4k I did NOT want to spend. but it'll hopefully take me thru another 60k. I have an issue with the drive shaft. Aparantly chevy has a real bad drive shaft cracking problem. (hate to say this, Ive had chevy's pretty much my entire life but they have been turning to s41t over the years) I guess that's what happens when there is no longer any accountability and too big to fail :( so once the truck is back, i got a load of mulch that is mine if I provide the labor. shovel time it is big boy heh.

Oh before I forget my pear tree is dropping pears like crazy. A few monster size but ton of smaller ones. Note to Pear owners: we all know their ripening quirks but WATCH OUT for wasps that want to nest in them when you are shaking and yanking. I got way too many pears to eat now so gave a bunch to the neighbor and also cut a bunch into slices which i will free dry for later. I was thinking pear ice cream but the consistancy, not sure of, so was thinking maybe puree them and use them as sort of a sugar substitute, so pear / something else ice cream instead???

ok back to work, I am roasting coffee today too so busy busy

You can also can some sliced pears and make pear butter too!

Is the tilapia pond for aquaponics?

I’ve done a few duck additions. Oddly, the three adult drakes dropped off were the easiest. Maybe they were used to being submissive.
In the beginning, I had a Pekin pair, and got some ducklings. Four males and a female. :he They weren’t in love with the babies, but didn’t bully them. One morning, I let everyone out of the coop, and a duckling was getting a drink. My drake went over, and bopped him in the head. That itty bitty duckling CHARGED after my drake! :gig:gig:gig The duckling returned to the bowls, and went back to drinking. The adult drake chose another bowl.
