What did you do in the garden today? - Page 9

Watered....watered.....watered some more....then fertilized...then watered some more. Did that for 6 hours straight. But my garden is a retail garden center with four 18X76' greenhouses and 12' isles in between that are filled with plants. When I left, I tagged my mother into watering duty....she's working late but has been watering for another 5 hours already. Then lather rinse repeat...

AAAALLLL we do is water!! sigh

Just got in from Vacation and my poor garden is totally over grown!

I got about 5 lb's of grapes off the vines this year tho I am so pleased! Plopped them in the dehydrator.

I have no idea what to do with the 20 or so cucumber and zuchinni waiting for me and I will be making 'sun dried' tomatos tomorrow after the raisins are in. I got a million grape/cherry tomatos waiting.

mmm home made cinnamon raisin bread! cant wait!.

I picked 44 lbs of peas, and then washed veggies for 4 hours.  My 4 kids, and their 3 cousins all helped their grandma pick the onions, beets, rhubarb, beans, potatoes, carrots, and garlic.   Now the veggies are all bundled into the crop fridges and waiting for market tomorrow.    It is warm today, but with the occasional clouds and nice cool breezes, it wasn't too bad.   We are all thankful that our summer temperatures are staying in the 70's and low 80's so far this summer.

I picked the rest of my zucchini and had to pull out the plants they were infested with squash beetles and nothing seemed to be controlling them, I don't use poison in my garden so I had no choice. I also found a few giant squash that I had missed somehow. Good thing chickens like summer squash.

44lbs of peas??! Good lord!

How big is your garden? I planted an 8 foot row of peas and all I got for the effort was 2 quart sized zipper baggies half full.

Hung a colorful version of shade cloth over my greenhouse frame today for the garden beds consisting of four old twin sheets in a variety of light colors. I'm hoping that they will keep my winter squash cool enough that they will set some fruit as they were just beginning to do so when the HOT HOT HOT set in. Not sure there's much hope though in 108 degree weather although yesterday we had a late storm front come through and cooled everything down for awhile. We went from 108 to 78 in about 15 minutes. It was wild. So far all my female blooms come on and wither away before they even bloom out. It's so frustrating. My summer squash on the other hand is going like crazy and not a squash bug in sight. I've killed 3 all season this year which is unheard of. This is the first time in 15 years I have ever had a zucchini squash produce in my garden because they are usually eaten by the squash bugs.

My garden is trying its best to hang in there and isn't yielding much yet (I have to pay for city water, and so it doesn't get watered much). But I did have the pleasure of going to my friends house and helping harvest some of her veggies. She has a certified organic, 100 acre grain farm and a huge veggie garden that her husband plants just to see grow....she buys all her veggies from a neighbor that grows organic...so all the veggies in his garden don't get used for much of anything.

She let me pick a brown paper bag full of green beans, a bag full of beets, some cukes and zuccinni.

I weeded, picked a few cukes, but the most important thing we did was set a squirrel trap. Grrrr . . .  Saw one of them with a green tomato so large he couldn't haul it up the tree. And they've been in the corn, too.   somad.gif

When we start catching them, we're going to be taking them for a little ride across the river. Let them swim home . . .
