Something is up with our chickens! - Page 2

Awesome! Glad to hear they've started laying again! yesss.gif

I may have missed this, but how long do they molt. We are fairly new to chickens.

Sometimes they can molt for a few months. I usually up their protein & add avian charge to their water. They need protein to grow their feathers back.

I'm out of eggs. But I know where some brown ones are. I now raise big Ol' Honkin' Bob Whites & Layed back Coturnix. Pray For Rain In Texas!

Thanks for the swift response. How do I increase the protein content? Is there a supplement for that, or should I add something to the feed?

There's lots of things you can use to up their protein. I wouldn't do too much though. A really good protein source is calf manna. You can get it at any feed store even WalMart sells it. Some people use BOSS - Black Oil Sunflower Seeds, but I'm not a fan of using it due to too much fat IMHO. You really don't want more than a 20% protein ratio and chickens also need the amino acids too. Lysine and Methionine really helps with feathers as well. Lysine is in egg products and Methionine is in greens.
