My automatic response to this question is always, "The sexy kind." wink.png

Hef is a brown red, and is currently "dating" a lovely brown red hen who has been hiding her eggs (and now herself) for a while now, so I've been hoping for brand new mini-Hefs every time I go into the chicken yard to feed everyone. If I get more of him, I'll be very pleased. More of her and I'll go deaf. She's loud.

And thank you to the judges for recognizing Hef with an award!

modern games

I dont mean to be rude, but if you were judging by show poses, the black modern game hen would have easily beaten the birchen. Modern game bodies should be a half circle tilted upwards, the black's body is near perfect, but the birchen's half circle has gaps in it, her body is also too long, she is flat chested, her thighs too far foreward, hocks/shanks/feet too far back. She has an overall unbalanced look.

The black is an exellent bird, I know modern games and she should have been placed higher than she is.

I do not want to cause offense, but If the judges are going to take the time to do this contest, they need to do a little reaserch so they can judge the birds fairly.

Yeah that was strange, I see what you mean. I think the same person owned both birds but the judges did mixed judging and we did separate categories and I mostly did the awards, the winner circle and arranged it, so I have no idea as to certain specifics of breeds. But maybe you can judge on the next round?

Very interesting. Thanks for posting this, Flameo. I have never had anyone tell me about the half circle in judging Moderns. I have been showing them for about 3 years and I am starting to be able to know a good one when I see it, but I still sometimes get confused at shows as to why one placed higher than another. I agree with you that the black is the better bird (the Birchen was mine).

Showing Modern Game Bantams and Self Blue d'Anvers! We also have a small flock of pets/layers.

You will learn more and more all the time.smile.png

There is a lot of trial and error in showing chickens.

By the way, your birchen might easily be better than she looks in the picture, it is hard to get a true veiw of a chicken in a picture. But since it is the picture being judged the black beats her.

If you didn't know, there are some good books on moderns in the APA and ABA online stores.
