I'm on day 14. I candled today and lost 4 more. Two that I was not sure of on day 7 hadn't progressed at all. Cracked them open and they were just yolks, no chicks. Two others had something in there but obviously not at the same stage as everyone else and no movement. Hubby opened them and one had quit begore there was anything recognizable. The other you could see the beginnings of its wings developing. It was sad.

But the 61 left are all moving. I'm so excited!

I'm having temp problems. One thermometer was just reading 105! The other thermometer was at 96. The 105 reading was directly under the bulb, egg level. The other one was next to a sponge thing I am using for humidity. I need to get this straight before I have to do lockdown...when and what is that exactly, and why important?

Stephanie in VA  3 kids, 2 dogs, 3 cats, and 14 chickens- hens: 2 leghorns, 2 golden comets,         2 australorps, 2 barred rocks, 1 NH Red, 1 LF buff brahma. Roosters: LF light brahma, 2 bantam cochins (1 black/multi colored frizzle, and one buff/red colored) blue orpington. My neighbors RIR rooster has recently moved in. I guess he is staying too

Yay!  I am still waiting, the eggs are moving every now and then.  pop.gifEven though we are just talking about chicks, the anticipation I am feeling right now is the same feeling I had waiting to go into labor with my daughter( a year ago)....kind of like waiting for christmas...

I'm new at this, but I've read alot. Lockdown starts on Day 18. You stop turning the eggs to allow the chicks to orient themselves for hatching. You avoid opening the incubator and bump the humidity way up to prevent the membrane from drying up and sticking to the chick during hatching (often called "shrink-wrapping"). You don't even open the door when chicks start to hatch. Just leave them in to fluff up while you are waiting for the stragglers to hatch. Does that help?

Just candled all my eggs. The 10 in the incubator all appear to be fine. Even the two that I thought were iffy. yesss.gif  Candled the 3 eggs my Silky is sitting on. They are all still viable, although 1 appears to be further behind in development from the other two. Even candled the 5 (not 7) chicken eggs my turkey is sitting on. One egg was definitely no good. I though it was because some of the 6wk old chicks were perching on the edge of the nest box and soiled the egg, but when I opened it I found it had never been fertile. Silky eggs are due Sunday or Monday, and the other chicken eggs are due Tues the 26th.  Here's hoping for a good hatch! yippiechickie.gif For every one!!
