Thank you for sharing! I'm trying not to become attached but there are a couple in my flock that act more like my dogs than chickens.

We butcher ours. I pressure can them and they get nice and tender. It's alot of work, but so worth it! If you don't want to process them, as previously stated, you could advertise them.

Chickens off and on for 25+ years and still learning.

Yell at them, lol.Seriously, they are  pets so  I am forbidden to kill any of them.My carnist kiddos just don't appreciate good clean meat when it is bawking at them. They will be cared for as any other pet.I did tell the kids no NEW chickens till we have way less of the originals.

dont you have to let the meat sit for 48 hours before cooking to let them go through rigamortis? Or they are very tough? I read this... we just lost one of out year old RIR to one of our dogs :( most of them get along with the birds but my son opened the door and one of the chicken killers got out :( she cannot help herself...but I was so mad...now I have been bringing in my chicks to sit on her ... she acts so worried that she might get one in front of me that she will not even look at them anymore haha anyway ...gulp I had my dad clean it I did not want her to go to wast, even though my husband wanted to bury her...we already had plans of culling her in the fall or next year.... he cooked it that night and said it was very tough...I told him I though he had to wait 48 hours??? Anyone???

I want to eat my own birds rather than supporting the supermarkets....but have yet to get up the stomach for it..(though I feel it is very hypocritical of me as the one I eat from the supermarket have a horrible life and I do not want to support it!) .I'm hoping for a mean roo to break me in right clap.gif I have never been so mad than when our bannie roo attacked me! I thought he would go in the pot as our 1st eating chicken...but a week later he saved my week old chicks from a stray cat and has since become my buddy and been forgiven all, I now catch him and carry him around for a while when he comes at me  tongue2.gif he hates it, I love it...win win lau.gif in my eyes

I've never heard of pressure can them. How do you do that?

I have to agree with you Annabell254 - great story! My other half will be the one to do the butchering...told him to do it when I wasn't around. Although I grew up on a farm with my grandparents in my younger years, I am not sure if I have the stomach for it.
