Chicks vs Pullets and a baby too

Hi all, I ran into a roadblock on my way to chicks; the landlord is absolutely dead set against having a heat lamp plugged in anywhere in or near the houses. If I scratch the chick idea and get young pullets instead, what are my chances of having the pullets turn out to be friendly family birds my 17 month old daughter can interact with?
He did suggest placing them in the coop I just brought home, but that just came from a friend's fence line, and it is nowhere near ready for anything domesticated to live in it. I know that if I go the pullet route, I have to get the coop in shape fast, but any ideas on this would be appreciated! :)

Hi Farmergirl12rc----

Actually your land lord has a point. I have read posts on here of folks that had fires as a result of heat lamps. An alternative for brooding chicks is a Brinsea Ecoglo--- It is much safer. Here is a link to a BYC discussion of the ecoGlo and it is radient heat.... https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/628554/ecoglow-chick-brooder

With your child, you also wouldn't want to risk a heat-lamp caused fire....so think about EcoGlo---- they are also a BYC sponsor the maker is Brinsea.

That being said..you can get friendly pullets too....and they are less work than adorable chicks---and come to lay more quickly.

Either way--go for it--- get chicks or chickens and enjoy the fun. Welcome to BYC

I know the landlord has a point and I have to be especially nice to him because he is my Dad. :) I was just looking at the EcoGlow and that looks like something I will be ordering very soon. Even if I do get pullets for this summer, chicks are definately on the horizon for next spring. Thank you ChicKat!
