Hello new chicken loving friends! We're new to raising chickens and space is an issue! We've been pretty creative thus far but would love some ideas from you all! We live in a second story apartment in a small city..We're building the coop in our outside porch but I'm concerned about how to "line" the bottom of the coop and with what exactly?! Does anyone have any suggestions? They wont be able to run on the ground like most so we have to be inventive I guess! They are only three weeks and the other two are seven days so they are still inside right now. I would like the coop done this weekend so please give me some ideas soon! Thanks so much1

For something like that I would say I would say a heavy aggregate sand and treat it like a litter box and clean it with a slotted scoop. I would also grow flats of grass in something like extra large cookie sheets so they can have the vegetation to scratch and eat. This is the first time I ever heard of raising chickens on a second floor balcony. Post some pictures when your all done. Interesting.

I agree, sand is the best way to go! Especially in a smaller setup like a balcony. I would also love to see pics, this sounds interesting!!

Zeolite! We put it in our 4x4 inside coop and so far love it! No mess no smell just scoop it once a day with cat litter scoop!

Currently we have a mix of RIRed, PBR, GoldenSL,and Amber White SL pullets.
