I have 10 silkies that are 1 week old, almost 2 weeks. I was wondering how big the coop should be along with the run? I have a horse pasture that I am going to use for my coop and run but I know I have to make sure that predators can't get them. We have a nasty hawk and some stray cats hanging around. I'm new to this and have no clue how big the coop needs to be. Any and all help or suggestions welcome.

The more space, the better, Bantams can get by with 3 square feet of floor space per bird. The important thing for silkies is that their coop is DRY. Their feathers don't insulate them or keep the rain off like other chickens. They can easily become chilled and die. They also aren't the brightest birds in the bunch, so you do have to make sure they come inside out of inclement weather. The coop should be draft free but have excellent ventilation. Also, I'd put coarse sand down in any muddy areas of the run. I have more about coop design on this FAQ (it's not just for silkies, but it should help you a bit.) http://hencam.com/faq/little-barn-coop-plans/

BTW, cats and hawks can decimate your flock. For silkies, I'd have hawk netting above the run.

I know this is an old post but what dimensions would a coop need to be for 7 birds LxW I don't understand the square foot thing.

21 square feet. You could have a 4 x 5 foot coop. That would be 20 square feet. Or, a 5 x 5 which would give you 25 square feet. I hope that helps.

This is my silkie coop and run. The coop is 4.5 x 2.5. Plenty of room for my 7 girls. They huddle together. Their run is about 5 x 6, give or take a foot.

That's a very cute coop! Thank you for replying, do your silkies have trouble getting up and down their ramp?

Thank you. The girls do not have trouble getting up and down the ramp. I "helped" them every evening until they got used to going up. I did find that they slipped easily so I used shelf liner and they did not slip.

Sadie demonstrates how easy it is to go home for the evening,

( her toenails were long and curled when I got her...they have since been trimmed short.)
