Eggs missing from under a broody hen

My hen went broody over a clutch of 7 eggs. When I checked last Thursday there were still 7. Yesterday the first chick hatched, so I waited until today to check and make sure everything in the nest box was alright. When I went in today, there was just a chick and 1 egg in the box, other than the hen of course.

So in a little less than a week, 5 eggs have gone missing. The hen doesn't look harmed or anything. The coop hasn't been disturbed and there is no sign of the eggs anywhere. No shells, yolk, dead chicks, nothing. The rooster does sleep in the house with her and the nest box, but he isn't aggressive and he isn't hurt either.

Where did my eggs go?

welcome-byc.gif  My first two guesses would be snakes or rats.  Both will also take chicks.

This happened to me recently .Check ur coop for security. After the eggs were gone . a racoon pushed my hardware cloth in from the eaves and got my best layer. He will have to destroy the hardware cloth to get in now. I'm stilll hoping my broody got away.

I have been carefully numbering my banty eggs and today to my shock all 8 eggs are gone from the nest.  No signs of struggles or egg pieces or nothing!!!

The nest was in the chicken coop inside the kennel.  I have hardware cloth from the ground to 24" high all arround and the rest is regular chain link.

What could have happen???   Eight eggs in one night?

I'm so depressed :-)

I'm so sorry to hear that, that's really terrible.

Unfortunately none of my chicks or eggs made it either.

It is very sad.

My run has hardware all the way up(8ft) over the roof(9x15),and has a 2 ft apron. Mine are staying here until  I can be sure the coop is secure. I know I had a mouse and a squirrel getting in mine thru the eaves...they were pushin and eating thru a soffit made of siding.

It was snakes alright.  Now my coop is a fortress.  I finally got babies and they are ever so cute.

My eggs got taken by a snake too.

I also had an issue with my chickens not sleeping in the coop for a while, instead they slept in my flower bed. So I think something got into the house and spooked them.

I've since moved the chicken coop and haven't had any problems since I moved them. No other eggs have been taken from the nest box either, and I haven't been on top of getting the eggs lately, I've been collecting them over other day or so. They've all been accounted for.

My hen hasn't gone broody since June, but hopefully she'll go broody next summer and she'll be able to hatch some chicks without the eggs getting eaten.

I'm glad that other people have figured out what their coop predator problems are.
