Works for me. Just do one wing though. This will make it harder for them to fly straight.

I've been wondering about this too lately. Ours are 8 weeks, and so far, show no inclination to leave our six-foot privacy fence.

Will they get bolder as they grow?

At what age do you start wing clipping?

How often after that do you have to maintain?

I only ever clipped our BR hen's wing, once.  The purpose was to keep her from flying to the top of the coop (5ft above the ground) to roost at night and to get it through her head that she was supposed to go IN the coop instead.  So we clipped her flight feathers on the right wing and presto!!!!....she flew up there anyway; albeit it took her a lot more effort to do so.

So I'd say that it depends on the height of your fence and how stubborn your chicken is. tongue.png

I've got one Marans girl that was fence hopping.... multiple times a day. I clipped her flight feathers on one side and she hasn't done it since, and that was months ago.

I clip most of mine, although I have a small cockerel that still manages to get over the fence... he finds objects to jump onto and then jumps from there onto the fence.... Apart from him the others are fine.

There is some good images/diagrams on google that show which feathers to cut etc if you've not done it before :D

My little family consists of: over 40 hens (including ex-batts, bantams and a wide range of other breeds), 9 cockerels, 10 chicks, 12 ducks, 3 dogs, 2 kittens, 1 cat, 12 rabbits, 4 geese, 10 Jacob sheep, 1 Romney Sheep, 9 lambs, 4 cows, a brother, sister, father and mumzy :D

I don't clip wings. One, I will show some of my birds and wing clipping isn't recommended, and two, I feel like I am limiting their abilities. I have nothing against people who clip wings, but I just don't do it. If flying is really a problem for you, you should clip. By the way, wing clipping does not stop all birds. Especially very flighty breeds.
