Hello! I have raised turkeys for a while and enjoy the turkey section of BYC, but I just got my first trio of Chickens! I got just-hatched Silkies. I was wondering.... with my turkey poults I have always made a soft "purring" or "cooing" noise that the turkeys have always responded to by getting sleepy and snuggly. Even my adult hens would calm down on their nest if I "purred" to them (yes, I'm a crazy animal lover lol). I was wondering if it's the same for chickens?? It has been my "magic noise" with my turkey poults... at night if they were crying to come out of their "house", I would purr to them and they would all nod off. Does a chicken hen purr to her chicks?? I have tried it and it seems to sort of work... but I've only had them for a day now and I'm not sure. There doesn't seem to be anywhere online to find out that sort of information... like, what sort of noises can you make to baby chicks to sound like a crazy bird lady :) lol. If anyone can answer that, or has any other information along the lines of specific "hen to chick" vocalizations I'd appreciate it!

Well, clucking is ideal, but it's tricky! I've had some chicks in a brooder and I hatched a new chick, 5 weeks later. We kept her separate, but next to the older chicks. When she started cheeping I heard the older chicks answering her by "purring". That got her quiet and happy. So you're on the right track, I think.

I'm so glad you said your turkey purred. We went to pick up chicks today from a farmer and he had a 5 week old turkey and it was the friendliest thing ever and while it was sitting in my hand it felt like it was purring. I asked the farmer about it and he just chuckled and said he'd never heard a turkey purr. I though he must think I'm a crazy but I'm so glad it wasn't my imagination!! :)

Hi guys!
Well that's good to hear, Sumi! Ever since I was young, I've been told I make a very good chicken (hen) imitation. I've been looking at videos of silkie hens so I think I'm getting down their "cluck" (which to me sounds more like "buck" haha). I guess I'll continue with both noises and hopefully it comforts them :)
Chickenbythesea... yes! turkeys most certainly purr! But it's not like a cat.. It's a lighter/quieter sort of sound (or feeling) but it's there! Turkey poults do it too when they're snuggling into you with their eyes closed. Usually it's only a hen cooing to her young or a baby snuggling... but I have heard of hens doing it with people too. Mainly I have heard people say that when they have all hens and no Tom, the hens tend to get really needy and will start following people around like they would the Tom, and laying down in front of them or on their lap purring. My friends' say it drives them crazy lol.. cause of course the hens are trying their best to be mounted/fertilized. haha... I wouldn't know about that cause I've always had a Tom and I never get close enough when they're mating to know if the hen purrs to him or not.

Thanks for the responses so far. I know there has to be other crazy bird lovers who "talk chicken" to their chickens lol :)
