it might slow down the hatch, but short stops shouldn't hurt the chicks :) Even mom chickens get off the nest, right??

I've got my fingers crossed for you guys. Today is the day I get to candle the eggs for real and see if I can see anything growing amongst my quail eggs!

I candled it again last night and I think I scrambled it when I dropped it :( It looked kind of grayish. It is a dark egg tho and I am by no means good at candling so I am going to leave it another day to two just to be safe. Yours may be okay tho since it wasnt dropped. Good luck to you

Looks like I've got at least 5 going, but the shells on some of these are so dark I can't see a thing! I don't take button quail eggs out of the incubator (even if I suspect they have died or are infertile) because the one time I did that I cracked an egg with a small embryo growing... I felt badly, and I've never had a quail egg explode in the incubator, so I have left everyone in for now. How's everyone's hatches going?

Congrats on the growing babies everyone! I candled again last night, and it looks like the original 11 that were developing are still doing well. A couple make me wonder, but I think some of the eggs are just hard to see through. The original 5 that were clear are still the same, so I'll prolly dump them Sunday or so...give them past day 10 to show ANYTHING. I don't think they're going to. I'm pretty pleased though...these are Serama eggs and I read all the horror stories about hatching them on here AFTER I bought my eggs...11 out of 16 so far seems pretty decent to me, doing only my second hatch in a still air Hovabator LOL!

candled my 7 Sizzle eggs yesterday. One had a blood ring an the other looked like it had stopped around day 3-4. So now I have 5 eggs that all have babies moving in them!! wee.gifThey go on lockdown Sunday. pop.gifThis is my last batch of eggs......for now. Right now I'm working on converting our big shed into 5 smaller coops. Just enough for about 4-5 chickens each.big_smile.png

I candled again, and only have three little egg babies out of the 23 that I set.  :(  I was hoping for better odds, but our post office is horrible. They put the eggs on the truck again, in the heat, despite us filing complaints in the past for killing chicks that way.  So much for call for pickup labels all over the boxes.

I'm trying to decide if I should risk buying more eggs, or buy chicks. There is a local farm that has chicks, but they're expensive at $8 each when you can't sex silkie chicks.  Hatchery chicks likely won't be good enough quality for 4H.  So do we risk buying more eggs by mail? I haven't seen any quality eggs locally. :o/

May I join in? I set 17 B/B/S Orpingtons on the 15th. The previous hatch (which was my first) didn't go well. Only 5 out of the 30 eggs I set hatched (shipped eggs). I found the Orpingtons locally and decided to try once more time. Just because baby chicks are so adorable! So far, only one bad egg - smelled up the bator.
