I may need long term chicken care before this is all said and done.  I heard that some of Woodland Park was evacuated today, and that the police road block closing Highway 24 was moved from about 1/4 mile West of our driveway to a location about 5 miles past West of our driveway.  Doesn't bode will for either our house or chicken coop.

 

Anyway, here's a few more shots showing the adaptations to the dog run that we've cobbled together to keep the chickens safe during their evacuation:

A few of the young ones have finally ventured out through the dog door to explore the outside.  Luna, my WPR looks offended to have her yard invaded.

This is amazing. While I am glad I don't live in a heavy disaster area you make me want to make something like this just in case... And for travelling. Really amazing.

Future veterinarian with two dogs, two rabbits and a betta... Plus many others gone over the bridge. Still working on getting those birds! Currently after Palomino meat rabbits, Orpington laying hens and Muscovy ducks!

What started as a somewhat silly idea (at least by my husband's viewpoint) and became, (at least in my viewpoint), a pretty nifty answer to the "how can I raise and graze 35 Freedom Rangers" question, turned into a life saver when we were given the order to evacuate.  I can't imagine what I would have done if we hadn't had a way to transport those youngsters away from our property.  I've been mourning the death of my vegetable garden all week, tracking in my mind how long each row might be able to last without being watered.  Now I'm starting to mourn the house plants and the three aspen trees I  planted last fall.  All this is sort of silly when you consider the fact that 200  homes have been lost and mine might be next, but I can't imagine how I'd be feeling if I had to leave living, breathing creatures behind.

I was thinking the same thing last night. Going to start planning an emergency kit for all my animals with food, water, and anything that might be handy. We don't have wildfires around my neck of the woods, but severe storms and tornadoes are always a threat in the spring through fall. I don't know what we would do if there was an evacuation order given. With 4 dogs, 5 cats, and 15 chickens and ducks I just can't imagine trying to move them all out and get supplies in the truck and cars. Truly, it pays to have a plan in mind, even if it's just a 'rough draft'.

 

Everyone out in Colorado and the West are in our prayers. This whole situation breaks my heart.

1 Silver Laced Wyandotte, 2 Naked Necks, 1 Cochin, 1 Easter Egger, 7 barnyard bantams, 3 Rouens, Pheobe the Aussie, Wally - Nermal - Bea - and Sassy the cats....and now a whole 'herd' of new chickens: chantaclers, orloffs, wyandottes, rocks, sussex, new hamps, and brahmas, along with Pippen and Squeak the button quails.

Tell your SIL that she is a wonderful SIL to let you stay with with her with your chickens.

Your husband is a keeper too.

Keep us posted on how things go. This is a learning experience for us.

Yikes, one of the little roosters was trying to crow this morning.  I asked him nicely to keep it down.  The last thing I  need right now is to be evicted by unhappy neighbors because my little ones are growing and crowing!

Oh no! Tell him what my momma used to tell me - shush your beak!

If nothing else, they are about the size of cornish hens at this point...

Speaking of which, how are you processing them? Are you taking them somewhere or doing it yourself? I'm sure your plans are totally in the air at this point until you find out about your house so I apologize if this is an intrusive question.
