PLEASE HELP! I'm new to raising chicks and will receive my girls this week! I've been reading up for the past month and asking questions at my local farm and ranch store, so I've heard my broody needs to set between 90-100 when they first arrive. I'm using a large tuber ware container (cleaned out with shavings of course) and a wire grate on top to help with ventilation. This is set up in our heated shop. Yesterday I recorded the highs and low temps for a 24 hour period. They were 92-98 under the heat lamp. But only 57-62 in the farthest corner away from the light! I'm thinking this way too much of a temperature variation. Should the whole broody be a consistent temp-in which case I probably add another lamp or should there be a change in temp? Is my home made broody okay or do I need to just fork out some money to do it right? Thanks in advance for all your help!

I have always followed the rule that states, place your heat lamp (red light is better than white, keeps the chicks calmer) at one end of your brooder and start with a temperature of 95 degrees. By adjusting your heat lamp up, you will lower the temp. Each week raise the heat lamp so the warming temp decreases by 5 degrees. Repeat until a temp of 75 degrees is met. By then your chicks will have all of their feathers and you can move them to the coop and run area. Watch your chicks, they will tell you if they are comfortable or not. If you see your chicks all huddled together then they are to cold and take the appropriate action. If the chicks are to warm they will move away from the heat source. And remember, always, always have fresh cool water for them! This has always worked for me, so good luck and will talk again in 18 weeks about your first eggs.
