Coin from 1851 found in the Roof!

Thread Starter

While fixing (replacing) the roof on our farmhouse my father found a penny in the rafters from 1851!

It has a dent on the center of each side??  Not sure why!  We knew the farmhouse was old, but have no record of it's "official" age, but that gives an idea that people were here in 1851.

What a neat discovery! I've always wished that I could find something interesting like that at my old farmhouse, but according to my Granddad, who grew up at the same farmhouse, he found all the cool stuff. Like coins from the early 1800's that his family ended up selling during the Great Depression to help make ends meet.

I'm not sure that's an American coin, worth cash like a penny.  It looks more like a tax token, but I'm not sure.  Maybe someone else will help soon.  I'm curious too, now!

How cool is that?!  What ever you do, do NOT clean the coin.  Collectors like to have a natural patina on old coins.  Can you imagine how that coin ended up in the roof?  So neat!

Married to the old dude, 0 human kids, 2 horses, 10 cockatiels, 2 parakeets, 1 sun conure, 1 amazon parrot,  1 eccentric peacock, 1 gsd, 1 pet terrapin, 1 Blue Copper Maran rooster, and 14 world famous Jersey Giants!

Stan the Man will be missed.

Thats so neat! Maybe there are holes in the side because it was used for jewelry purposes?

I think it is called a Liberty Head.  What does the other side look like?  Is it a dollar coin?

I believe it's called a Braided Hair Penny.

Looked like that from 1843 through 1857.

Actually copper...as in "copper cent piece"

After this design, I believe the mint went to the common

size penny we have now.

You know Peaches, I've been meaning to start a coin collection.

If you were to send me that big penny, I would have one piece in

my coin collection.

Great find.

(and apparently a pretty good roof was one your house to of lasted

that long.)

Spook

**Check your date closely....1851 penny had some as reversed stamped

dates showing "8151"

***The reverse side should be as "one cent" in middle surrounded by a leave

pattern with "United States of America" on outside edge, Blue.
