Where can I take a one-legged healthy 7 week old home raised Mallard duck to be protected?

I rescued about a week-2 week old wild mallard duckling who I assume was being drowned by its mother because it only had one leg. She is now about 7-8 weeks old and living in an enclosure in my home. Her feathers aren't fully in, but I am assuming she is a female. She is very healthy and very accustomed to human touch. I am 9 months pregnant and unfortunately unable to care for this duckling in the very near future due to time constraints and mostly unavailable outdoor housing for her in my backyard. I am looking for a home for her or a wildlife rehabilitation center that would be best informed in what to do with her. It breaks my heart to see her go, and I just want what's best for her at this point. If there is any advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

I rescued an adult wild dove with a really bad leg a few years ago. I took him to a reahabber who was very happy to have him. She said that while he probably couldn't be released, she regularly got baby wild doves, and having an adult dove around would help them to learn how to act like doves and to associate with their own kind when they were released.

 

So it's possible that your rescued duckling will grow up to be a rescuer. Call animal control and ask for the numbers of wildlife rehabbers in the area--or the humane society will have them.

HI, and welcome to BYC. I'd definetly call your local wildlife rehad center. They may keep it onsite permanently as a teaching aid. It was nice of you to rescue. You may also find someone here who will take her/him. Good luck with finding a new home.

 

The mother was doing what was best actually, even though we may not see it that way. It more than likely would have been turtle bait, or some other predators dinner since it is one legged. We take off the human emotion, and this is what it commonly done among animals in the wild.

At the very least, wipe the poop off your feet before getting in the car.

where are you located?  I am outside Orlando Florida and currently have both a Magpie female and a "rescued" mallard who has severe Angel Wing.

We live in Las Vegas, Nevada. I am having a hard time finding contact numbers to rehab centers in my area...

Just did some googling.  Found Gilcrease Bird Sanctuary.  phone 702-645-6808,  also saw Betty Honn's Animal Adoptions in Henderson, NV phone 702-361-2484.  Safe Haven Rescue Zoo 775-538-7093 in Imlay, NV.

Don't know if any of these can help, but at the very least, they might have some resources for you to check into.  Good luck.
