I'm having some issues with a chick hatched just yesterday. It doesn't quite look like spraddle leg, the legs come forward instead of splaying out to the side and the chick is unable to keep it's balance. Even with band-aid splints on the legs, the chicks legs keep coming forward and up on either side of the head and the chick seems to be "paddling" in attempt to right itself. The right leg appears to be rotated outwards and the toes are kept splayed but are not curled or turned. The left leg seems positioned normally but the toes are being held straight and together (I want to say they are clenched but thet are straight and not curled or bent at the knuckles so it isn't really a "fist"). The wings are also being held extended and forward, but they can be manipulated back to a normal position so I'm pretty sure it's just from trying to keep balance. As far as I can tell, the chick is unable to walk or stand unassisted.

Any suggestions on what I may be dealing with or how to modify a splint so that it may correct the problem? I am reluctant to cull as this chick is one of only 3 to hatch from a dozen shipped eggs. But at the same time, I'm not sure how much intervention I am willing to provide either as the other two chicks are being brooded by my broody hen and I am not interested in setting up a brooder for a single chick.

The chick didn't make it. It was dead in the nest box just now when I went out to check on them. I'm not sure what happened, I didn't see any obvious signs of trauma to indicate that it had been pecked to death, although there were 4 eggs in the other nest box so I suppose it's possible that it was crushed in a scuffle.

I'd still like to know if anyone has any ideas on what may have been going on with the legs. I've looked up "poultry orthopedic problems" and the only things I kept coming up with were spraddle leg and slipped tendon and it really didn't look like the photos or descriptions of either of these problems to me.
