How old is your oldest chicken?

How old is the oldest one you ever had?

Our good old rooster is really slowing down, napping on the job regularly, he is good old guy but I am afraid he is not going to be around too much longer.  We don't know his actual age, but my son's don't remember what moms place was like before him.  He is many years older than our dog.

He is at least a teenager, some where I have a photo of my 24 year old son under 5th grade holding him.

We got my oldest hen when my son was a baby and he'll be 6 next month. I don't know how old she was when we got her, but she was laying already. She hatched out some chicks a few weeks ago. And she still lays regularly when she's not broody.

Though I was around chickens as a kid on my grandfather's farm, I didn't have any of my own until many years after my husband retired from the military and we moved up to the mountains.

My oldest is the last remaining hen from my original ten hens, Sunny. She is 6 1/2 years old and hasn't laid in a year and a half. (Sunny is a hatchery hen)

I incubated my first batch the following year to add to the flock, so the next in age would be my Blue Orp rooster, Suede, my Buff Orp/RIR cross Meg, and a hatchery Buff Brahma, Caroline, all of whom are now over 5 1/2 years old; two months younger than Suede are two Barred Rock hens, Becca and Amanda. All those hens mentioned, except Sunny, of course, are still laying regularly right now.

I'm not really sure how old she is, but I have one Buff Orp who is somewhere between six and seven years old. Rarely lays, but she's still getting out and doing her chicken things every day.

My oldest is a silkie rooster named Morticai. He turned 9 in May. He can still hold his ground with the younger roosters and still loves the ladies. I'm getting ready to start writing his obituary, which will be a long one. Hopefully he'll be around for many years to come.
