what do raccoons like and cats don't like to eat? I am trying to catch some coons that are trying to kill my other chickens. I have set a few traps and all I keep getting in the traps are he.gif cats. What can I put in the traps that the cats don't like? idunno.gif

Marshmallows. I've heard that Pepsi works too. They have a real sweet tooth. Much more than any cat. There are also raccoon-specific traps that won't catch dogs or cats.

I have gotten coons with canteloupe, apples, carrots, and plain old nothing in the trap! Lucky to have a high traffic area for my trap.

I've tried Marshmallows before and they wouldn't touch it. Used some table scraps and caught him.

I spent the afternoon stapling ugly hardware cloth to my beautiful new coop to discourage a raccoon ( I assume) who has been chewing large chunks out of my coop at the vent holes.  I can only imagine how terrified my poor chickens are as this miserable creature is gnawing its way in only a short distance from their roost.  These things are no longer the stuff of cartoons and coloring books for me.  I HATE THEM.

Live trap is set with marshmallows coated in strawberry preserves (Dad said pineapple sundae topping but I figured it's all the same), wish me luck!  I'll keep my fingers crossed for you as well.  Anyone know of the legalities of shooting these guys in a trap?  I am in Ohio.  All that I can find online is that they should be "humanely euthanized".  To me that means I can shoot them, anyone know for sure?  Also, the legalities of painting him pink and releasing him as a warning to his friends?

If you're in an area where you can shoot, there is nothing better than a Duke dogproof trap.  They're about $12.00 online, and if you bait them with marshmallows they're deadly on  coon.  Once you catch the coon in the trap simply shoot it in the head with a .22 and you're done. Think you don't want to kill a coon? Feel sorry for the poor animal?  Tomorrow morning  when you go out to the coop take a look at your favorite hen; the one who follows you around, the one who hops up on your arm, and think which life you want to save, hers or the raccoon.   POP... bye bye raccoon.
