Is SOME medicated feed ENOUGH medicated feed??

Our new baby chicks have been in the coop with Mama, Papa, and 15 aunts since they hatched. I put out lots of medicated feed, and for the first few days, that's all they ate. However, Mama soon started introducing them to grown-up food, and as of today, Day 12, she has them out free-ranging with her. So I'm thinking from now on, they'll be getting a small portion of their diet from the medicated feed. Any thoughts on how much is necessary to establish their immunity to coccidiosis? If this is insufficient, should we go ahead and vaccinate them, even though they've had a few days' worth of medicated feed? Or are these questions I should pose to a local vet?!

Thank you, yet again, for all your help for a new chickie Mama! (I'm starting to feel more like an expert every day, however...)

From what I have learned they will build up the immunity (if they are going to) with or without medicated feed. They are actually working towards removing medicated chick feed because of the process that is done to make the feed. If the chicks are healthy they will survive, if they are weak they will probably die from coccidiosis or something else. There are so many different strains of coccidi that it is almost impossible to protect against it. Good luck finding a vet that will vaccinate them- avian vets are hard to come by and most of them tell you to just treat them when they get sick- and they usually add, "they're just chickens" of course my vet has learned they are not just chickens to me. Vaccinations in my opinion are a waste of time as long as you buy good stock and don't introduce sick chickens into your flock.

agreed. No medicated feed is better than feeding it at all. It serves only to build up strains of antibiotic resistant diseases.
