Thinking about maybe ordering a couple female geese from Ideal poultry to see how I like geese. Is this a good Idea? Or should I get them from somewhere else? (holderread and get ganders as well) Please tell me what is best. Thanks (really only interested in pets, and maybe some hatching if i got a gander)

I wouldn't order any goslings from anywhere this time of the year.

1- too hot out to ship safely
2- very late in the season most breeds are sold out

I ordered some geese from Metzers. It's late in the season. Metzers is closer to me or I would not have. I got my ducks early in the morning (before the heat of the day) the day after they shipped. So I am prayerful that they are ok. Next year we might add a few more geese to our flock and if we do so it will be late Spring from Holderread. Early May is a good time of year for us. Weather is nice. I'd go local but with the geese- I really want some of SQ or EQ from Holderreads. OR if my goose goes broody and I can get them in time- I would love to buy some hatching eggs from a reputable breeder and let her hatch some goslings. That would really be perfect for me. :D

If you could get some hatching goose eggs from somewhere when one of your ducks goes broody that could be perfect! Wait...can a duck hatch a goose egg? They are rather large! LOL

Congrats on your Africans!!

I wouldn't want to buy goose eggs to put under a duck. I have had 5 ducks gone broody and never had any sit full time, tried to save a nest of 2 duck eggs, but then some thing took them from the broody chicken I put them under. I have bad luck with broody ducks all around.

I have been eye these babies up though. But probably won't ever get them.

lmbo as soon as I said it I was like....ummm maybe not. haha! We did opt to go with a hatchery for our first set of geese. They are for pets really. We did get a pair so if we want to let them sit on on some eggs in the next couple years- we have that option. But I do love some of the other geese breeds too so I like that we will already have a goose so she can sit on any good quality goose eggs I might come across. :)

Ideal has excellent customer service and they send healthy birds.

I don't know about their geese, but ducks are the low end of pet quality and don't always have calm temperaments.

If you are going to order through a hatchery instead of buying from a private breeder, I would recommend a waterfowl specialist like Metzer's.  Or a show breeder with an internet presence like Holderread.

This has been my experience. My ducks from them are pretty healthy but despite all my hard work of getting them to 'like' me they are just skittish and not very calm. I still love them- I just know my limits with their temperaments.

My ducks from Metzers are all calm, the breeds appear truer - so I did get a pair of geese from them because of this. Next year if we love our geese- I am venturing out into the geese breeder world to maybe get some hatching eggs. :D

What about the bargain assortment from Holderreads? You can get some Holderread quality birds for $9 a gosling which is about what I pay for hatchery quality birds down here.
