You are absolutely right! Chicken wire only keeps birds in - it doesn't do much of anything to protect them from predators! I learned that the hard way last year...something actually ripped a hole in the wire and took one of my duckies. :(
I use the welded wire/hardware cloth now for their pen, and bring them in at night. When I do get a full size live-in run for them, it's gonna be 1" chain link fence, extended below the ground so animals can't dig under and get in, with solid wood along the first 2-3' from the ground. Maybe then I'll feel that they are safe outside. :\
