Does Anyone Show there Chickens Anymore

It seems that hardy no one shows there chickens anymore. Why is this? Is it becasue the chickens are so hard to come by to get  to show or people are affraid to show because the dont want to get beat.??

Great question. I just got into chickens and am now worki g towards show quality to be able to show and have very little idea how to get started

For myself, I don't because the shows are too far away. With the prices of gasoline, I'm just not willing to drive 200+ miles to show a chicken. Also, it is difficult for many to even know when and where the shows are.

I think it's at least partly the time of the year. No shows here in Florida before the fall so they are not on people's minds just now.

Did you go to a show and there were no chickens there?

 

There are chickens at the shows around here.

 

If you mean that there is nobody showing chickens who posts on BYC, very few serious breeders or poultry showers hang out on BYC.

For some it has nothing to do with the quality or getting beat but rather the new laws some states have imposed on out of state poultry. Many are now requiring AI testing within a limited number of days before a show for all out of state birds. Those in states where they have to be tested either have horrible State run testing and cannot get someone to come out and test or the individuals have a heck of a time getting the results back in a timely fashion. Other states have ridiculous fees for the testing.  NC has lost several good out of state competitors to the new AI rule. sad.png

How far do you live from Lake City Fla. They have a big show there in Jan every year.

 

I was at the feed store today talking to a old fellow who has been there 50 years. He is Mr. Henry if  I need help with this or that this    man is  like  a PhD in common sense and knows ever thing to help the hobby farmer.

 

He told me there use to be three or four people in this region  who had good pure breed chickens.  Now there are only about two and I told him a new one in Elberta going big guns. He said people just dont care any  more.

 

He said today people think eggs and chickens come from a grocery store and baby chicks come from a factory in Texas.

 

He is a breeder of Jack Russell Terriers good ones but he says  this breed is slipping breeding for the show ring or to a standard..

 

I can see gas being a issue and hotel costs. Nothing like going to a big show and seeing great quality birds that you have never seen be for.

 

I got a guy who wrote me the other day and he told me my wife and I showed as Juniors in the 1960s. We are moving back to my mom and dads old farm and we want to get some nice cattle and chickens. What has happen to the breeds we use to raise and show. Its like they just disappeared from the face of the earth or changed in shape. Sad story really he and his wife where shocked to see what has happen.

Wow. Thanks for that info robert. I dont know where lake city is but i will sure check them out.

Yep. This too. Texas is rather large and the testers have huge areas to cover. It depends on where you are in the state as to whether it's easy to get tested or not. For my area, just try to get a tester out. I banged my head against the wall a while trying but I've given up for now. Once my plans give fruit and I have the flock I want, I'll be at it again.

Here is a good book used in the old days  that you might like to read and look at the pictures. I hope to show a few times this next year. I hate to spend money on gas and motel bills to show and I sometimes get discussted with the judges on how they judge some classes like rhode island red bantams. I would like to go in January to the Lake City Show. Also, the show in Newnan Gerogia next February and they have a show up the road from me in Clanton Alabma in October that is a nice show.  Hope others can at least just go to one some day to see all the breeds. bob
