That first one definitely looks like a cockerel to me but the second one is a little harder to say.  I'd guess both boys, though.

3 Welsummers, 8 Cinnamon Queens, 2 Easter Eggers, 1 barred rock, 1 Blue Wheaten Ameraucana, 1 leghorn/ameraucana cross, 2 RIR and 7 EE/OE chicklets, 6 rabbits, 1 mischievous housecat, one Catahoula bulldog, and one amazing husband to share it all with!  Just call me coop queen!

I agree the first is definitely male.  Something says hen to me about the second though, but thats just gut feeling.  You'll have to wait another week or so to be certain.

You can't be totally certain by looking at them at this age (or at least I can't). I might guess the bottom picture is a hen by the short comb and wattle. The top picture, at that angle, makes the wattle seem more prevalant and the comb a bit fuller. Could be a rooster. I'm not familiar with marans and their growth patterns. Start watching for the spur at the back of their legs.

Well, they aren't Cuckoo Marans, for one thing, certainly not pure ones. They'd look almost like Barred Rocks if they were, just with more chevron-like barring. They only have the barest hint of barring at all. They have to be mixed with something else.

They both seem to be males, though, certainly the first one is without a doubt. Second could be a pullet, I guess.

They're way too young for spurs, Auntie. They'd have to be close to 8-10 months old to really have spurs.

Ok. Thank you. I ordered them from a breeder but I guess that doesn't necessarily mean much. As long as the eggs are good I won't really mind. big_smile.png

They definitely aren't pure Cuckoo Marans, they both look like cockerels to me.

My 4 month old cochin roos are starting to show their spurs, but you're right. I wasn't clear about the age thing. Just a bit too excited talking chicken to people who can relate!  :)

Both sexes have the spur bump on the leg, but I've never seen any cockerels less than 6-8 months old with actual spurs. I do have some hens with them, though, so spurs are really not the best way to sex. By the time they come out, most folks are pretty sure of the bird's sex. smile.png
