Outside Time

We just picked up our chicks.  We were informed that they are less than 2 weeks of age.  When can I start taking them outside for some exercise and playtime with me?

They are old enough to go outside for "field trips" with supervision. Best wait till the afternoon and not too windy.I would make sure they have water available to them and watch to make sure they don't get chilled. They will eat bugs and grass while outside. If they have access to dirt or sand they can pickup their own grit. They will need it if eating anything solid other than their starter. It's a good time to bond with them by sitting near and interacting with them.

I have taken mine out in the afternoon time since they were about 2 weeks old. I sit on the porch and make sure they aren't getting into trouble.

Not sure what the norm is, but my babies seem to be loving it! Right after lunch they start chirping at me expectantly because they know it's time for outside playtime.

Thank you Ron C & WRVgirl!  It is going to be another beautiful day here in CT so that will be their first day outside.

Yay!

Have your started "startle flying"? [Not sure what the technical term is for this reaction]

When the wind blows, or a car drives by they both jump and flap and chirp...it's about the cutest thing ever.

Mine went out this afternoon too! The weather has been amazing here the past couple of days, but they spent most of their time outside trying to climb into my lap :)Chickenbutt.jpg

They appear to be attempting to fly but not because they are startled.  It happens when the flock gets too far apart, one will sprint while flapping her wings to get back to the rest of them.  I cannot believe how fast they are!

I took more pictures of chick butts than I wanted to.  It was very rare that they looked at me or the camera. barnie.gif
