So I have 2 birds that are 6 weeks. Their sounds seem to be changing. I "think" they are both girls buut one of them is growing red wattles and so if it were to be a boy I was wondering when it might cock a doodle doo! It seems to be the head chick--not sure if that is a boy thing or girl thing or just top chick thing. It also seems to be protective of the 2 week old chicks. Not sure whether that is mothering, roostering or coincidence? They are so fun to watch. Is cock a doodling chick dependent? breed dependent?
Thanks!!

Um....I think once they get all their feathers and they have developed distinguishing features of a rooster then they begin to crow....sometimes it is funny. I couldn't tell you exactly when it will be that they will crow. it is hard to say. But almost always once they become sexually mature, I believe that is the point that they start to develop a crow.

I took a look at your pictures and it looks like your black chick is a rooster. I tell by the comb, if the the comb is larger then the other chick(s) then it is a male.

I hope I have been some use in helping you out here. :)

I think it depends on the individual to a point, and also probably depends on how early their breed matures. Some mature faster than others. I have a 19 week old Silkie who just started crowing this past week as well as "dancing" for the girls, and I also have an 11 week old Modern Game Bantam cockerel who started crowing a couple days ago...and he will "bokbokbok" to call the two little girls over to get the yummy green grass in my yard. So cute to see such a baby already taking care of his ladies.
