A Little Paranoid

I lost my outside flock to what we believe was a URI; sneezing, coughing, raspy, rattley, bubbling eyes. My 2 Orphingtons live indoors but were outside a couple times...the other chickens didn't approach them at all but they were in the same yard.

I'm terrified that my Ofphs have it too. They seem fine, but one keeps kind of sneezing and shaking her head a bit. They're bedding is due to be changed tomorrow [I change it about every other day]

The rational part of my mind is telling me that I'm just paranoid.

So, is some sneezing/head shaking normal in young chicks? I have no idea what's normal and what's not.

This stinks :/

It would give them electrolytes/vitamins just in case. They may or may not have it. Try not to worry. If they do have it, there's not much you can do. If they don't have it, your stressing yourself for no reason. Just keep an eye on them. Keep my updated. I hope they're alright. :)

Oh, how long ago were they exposed to the sick birds?

It's been a couple weeks since they first went out back, where the flock lived.

They were out two days ago but I noticed one of the older chickens rasping and immediately took them back inside....they were outside for less than 2 minutes.

I've let them out front [where no chickens have been before] today and yesterday....

I'm thinking it's just dust from their bedding [that I'm changing first thing tomorrow.] I'm going to bleach everything down, including the back porch....

Hopefully I'm just being paranoid.

I added some apple cider vinegar to their water and cinnamon and oregano to their medicated kibble [because I read that can help kill anything fungal] I have some tylan50 in case it gets worse.

UPDATED: I just got out of bed and went to sit by their tub...I don't hear anymore sneezing....just them scratching their litter around.

Everybody cross your fingers that these two little babies aren't infected :/ I would hate to lose ALL of my chickens in this ordeal.

They should be fine then. :) If it's been that long since they were exposed to it for any real length of time, they should be showing obvious signs by now. It sounds like it was just the dust, like you said.

Chicks were fine this morning, I immediately changed their bedding and used some bleach/water mixture to scrub the bottom and sides of their tub [then rinsed and dried it with plain water]

They aren't sneezing or shaking their heads or anything, I'm pretty sure I was just being paranoid.

It's an awful feeling though, every time they do something that looks remotely like what the sick chickens did, my heart seizes up in my chest and I panic...I can't cull myself, so I don't know what I'd do if they too ended up with URI :/

I

I know the feeling. I have tried to talk myself into culling really sick chicks a few times, but ultimately ended up waiting for my dad to get home to do it for me ever time.

I'm glad they are doing well. :) Have fun with your babies.
