Explaining Chicken Math

Our counselor suggested that we should not give our kids breakfast with sugar in it well the only thing I can come up with that they like is EGGS!!! So 5 days a weeks we started eating eggs, 5-8eggs a day, so 25-40 eggs a week. Well I decided i NEED chickens then to supply oraganic fresh eggs! We bought 3 hens to start getting eggs right away. Well so far we get 2 eggs a day consistently. Not enough! Sooooo one week later we got 5 chicks (different color egg layers lol). Well now we are in search of the 2 colors of egg layers we don't have yet (olive & chocolate) and because I'm super impatient I want 4month old hens. Omgosh soon we will have 10 chickens and I've only had chickens for 1 month. Starting construction on a 4x10 coop and a 20x20 run, Ive lost my mind lol. Seeing other posts on this subject make me feel much better though!

I dont have chicken math issues here since I have "Ladies" not chickens. However I started planning a new coop for everyone to be civil and happy with separate quarters. so first things first I had to write down names for each coop partition.....

HMMMM
I must say even my Christmas card list is not that long!

Guess I am still pretty bad at math.

Here is my chicken math:

Started with 5 (4 hens and a roo) - 4 (3 hens and roo killed by predator) + 4 (3 hens and one roo from the neighbor) – 1 (hen killed by roo) – 1 (bye-bye to that roo) + 3 (free hens on Craigslist) + 11 (chicks from local breeder – most of which turned out to be roos) + 2 (hens from the neighbor – 7 (too many roos) + 6 (hens from the feed store) + 5 (chicks from broody hen) + 5 (chicks from another broody hen) – 5 (sold chicks to neighbor) – 1 (roo went after our son) + 1 (roo showed up in our yard one day) – 1 (roo with back injury) - 1 (hen killed by hawk) – 6 (hens killed by fox) - 3 (roos sold on Craigslist) = 12 remaining (if I did my math right – 4 EE’s, 4 barnyard mixes, 1 australorp, 1 barred rock, 1 buff Orpington, 1 Welsummer) with plans to build a new coop runs to add more chicks in the spring.

I blame my hubby. It was his idea to get chickens and I was originally opposed to the idea. But, now I’m the one who’s obsessed.

My chicken math is much less impressive than you alls. Its a lot like my fish math, really.

The plan is to get four hens, as baby chicks, which I read have a 90% accuracy on sexing, so the plan is to get five chicks, figuring we might get a rooster - which would leave us, hopefully, with four hens.

Ideas?

Are you going through a breeder, local feed store. or hatchery?

sometimes feed stores get mixed by customers or unknowing employees so rates go down.

You might consider older pullets and only get the 4 you want. depending on the breed like sexlinks can be sexed by color I think. and most normal feather breeds can be better sexed by 10 to 15 weeks.

Good luck and expect Chicken math to get ya! It will!

I am planning on getting my chicks through our local feed store. I just assumed they were getting female chicks in, I had no clue that they might be getting mixed chicks in. I suppose I should ask. But yes, through a local feed store.

I got a to see the chicks they got in last week just as they came in and they had three breeds, or rather two breeds and one mixed breed (sex-links) and the chicks looked very healthy and hearty, active, bright eyed and cheeping like mad. I was very impressed they were so healthy, and pleased.

Do you think I should get more than 5 chicks to make sure I end up with four hens?

If we get a rooster, which I understand is quite common when getting baby chicks, he will end up in our bellies. No roosters allowed here and I couldn't put up with all the crowing anyway.
