Scarecrows & plastic owls

Do scarecrows and plastic owls really work to deter predators like hawks, coyotes and foxes?  Has anyone actually been successful at protecting free range chickens this way? 

 

We've lost 2 chickens in 2 weeks and I'm willing to try almost anything - except building an enclosed run!

Not-so-new to chickens with my first free-ranging flock of 12 started on 3/4/2012 - 2 White Leghorn, 2 Tetra Tint, 2 Buff Orpington, 2 bantam Buff Cochin, 4 bantam OEGB/Silkie mixes.  Hatched 8 bitties on 9/9/12 with 2 broody OEG hens.

 

Learning the hard way with a current flock of 6 - Lost 7 to predators and 1 bitty to an accident, gave away 6 chicks.

Never worked at my place and i got a perty one with a moving head too, critter looks real but it didn't scare my birds so i should have known better. LOL

I was at TSC today and bought an owl any way.  My husband laughed at me, but I thought "If there is any chance it could work, why not?"  I probably just wasted $8.99, but at least the kids feel better!
