Motorcycle Helmet Laws

Thread Starter

Just watched a news story about motorcycle accidents being up in our area this year, and of course they brought up that the fatalities occurred mostly in cases where a helmet wasn't worn.

So I'm wondering how it's possible that we have seat belt laws for cars (plus newer cars come with airbags) but have no national helmet law????  I guess I'm wondering about the logic (or lack thereof) of it...

Nope an we should not have them. A adult should have the right to be stupid with his own life. Children on the other hand I beleave in seatbelt laws.

I agree... same with sealbelt laws...i'm an adult..if i want to risk my life its my choice. Children are another story though..

If you are injured through lack of a seat belt or helmet, you tie up medical and other resources unnecessarily. More importantly, you create problems for family and friends.

I'd rather take the precautions required by law than find myself permanently disabled with no quality of life and those close to me distressed. I don't feel comfortable without a seat belt on and won't drive until all of my passenger are belted up. Rear seat passengers think that they are safe without belts but, in an impact, the only thing that would prevent them from being thrown through the windscreen is my skull.

Let me be clear, I never move my car without my seatbelt on an did even when I was exempt from the law but I dont think it is my place to tell someone else that they have to in there car any more than it is my place to tell someone else who they should marry or what church they should go to.

I could probably agree with that if there was no relevant law. It would still be irresponsible.

Hi all,

I wish they would make it if you CHOOSE NOT to use a helmet or seatbelt, YOU wave your right to any and all medical help and care. ( It can and does run over $100,000.00 a day for some of the medications and special equipment to keep a vegetable alive.) I have personally washed (gray matter) off the streets many times after a motorcycle accident with no helmet. And have also washed down (gray matter) from people thrown from cars and trucks. I have transported many people to the hospital that I knew the lights were on but nobody was home. Only to restock and go out the ER Entrance and have the kids or spouse ask when is Daddy or Mommie going to wakeup and come home. Breaks my heart a little more each time.

I also belive horseback riders should use an approved riding helmet. At least now minors in competition must use them. I will not let anybody ride any of my horses or on my property without a helmet. And all must sign a release.

I know most of you will not agree with what I said, but just think about it the next time you want to feel the freedom. Who is going to be in your kids life, just so you could feel the freedom.
